How much is an older 629 worth?

I'm not sure exactly of the age, probably around 10 ys. old, .44 mag, 5" barrel, and blued finish. The guy I'm thinking of buying it from hasn't used it too much, and it is in pretty good condition. Any idea on what it would sell for? I am friends with the guy, and want to give him a decent amount for the gun.

Ummm... 629 is a stainless steel N frame chambered in .44 Magnum.

Blued would be a model 29. A 5" barrel and 10 years ago makes me think of the 29 Classic (full lugged 5" barrel), unless it was a special order, I don't think the regular 29 was offered in a 5" barrel length at that time. If you open the cylinder and look at the frame just below the barrel's breech end, you'll find a model number (29-2 for example), knowing that will get you more info on build date.

Prices vary pretty widely by region, but around here, $400-$425 is about the best price a seller could hope to get for a used 29.

Good luck

A 10+ year old 44 can have alot of miles on it. For $500 you can basically buy a SS NIB Ruger Redhawk in the same configuration. Go Blued and it gets cheaper. Used 44's in my part of the world don't sell at all. Gun shops won't even take them in on trade. If it's not a deal then I wouldn't bother. $300 is about all he would be getting for a trade in. Go $375 MAX. Be sure to check the top strap before buying it. Many are cut badly and that is a sign of heavy use.

As you can tell,

I am not a S&W revolver expert. It could be 6", I never actually measured it. I have shot it and it does pretty well. It is in very good condition, but I can't stand the grip on it. I don't think it has been shot much, as this guy isn't too much of a range junkie (unlike me :) ). Thanks for the help so far.

If they are the big wooden plow grips, I agree, they are very uncomfortable. Although the Houghue grips don't do much to the looks of the gun, I find them to work very well for range use. If it has a round butt, getting a grip w/ a square butt conversion also helps w/ the balance IMO.

That would be them. It is the equivalent of holding a odd-shaped block covered in sandpaper. I would definitely get some Hogues to replace the hand-shredders.
