How much for a Browning Buckmark Standard?

I was out of town when BnB had it's sale on the Buckmark, for $219. It's regular price though is $249. I walked in yesterday and it said $259. Ouch. How much should I be paying for a slab side buckmark standard?

What about a 22/45 Ruger? How much should I pay for one of those???

Keep in mind I'm in Kommunist Kalifornia...

Thanks,
Albert

$259 is under MSRP...barely. I would recommend against a Buck Mark, though. I just don't like the design. First, the slide is held down with a plate that uses two hex screws, and the front one on mine will work itself loose if I don't use Loctite. If the screw works itself loose too much, it will not keep the firing pin down (it's hinged) and you will have many misfires. In order to properly clean the barrel you need to undo yet another screw (this time a regular screw) to remove the barrel. Otherwise you will be cleaning from the muzzle. If you decide to scope it, you will need to remove the scope each time, so you need to re-zero the scope every time you disassemble the gun.

My particular model will also jam a lot unless it receives a lube job with either Breakfree or MPro7 Ultimate Gun Lube.

Lastly, while people do not like the fact that the grips hold some of the parts of the gun together, it's not hard to put them back together, and it's great that you can remove the parts easily and lube them to smooth out the trigger.

In the beginning I really liked my Buck Mark, but it has slowly soured on me to the point that I will recommend people to get a Ruger instead of a Buck Mark.

The Buckmark was $249 at the last gun show I went to. (I'm in TN.) So $259 is a decent price in my opinion, but you might could do better. Sometimes though, if you talk real sweet to the manager and explain how you couldn't be in town for the sale, you can still get the discount. I've done it with other items at least. Not with a gun though. $219 would be a really good price on the gun. I'm with NovaTerp though on Browning vs. Ruger though. I like my 22/45.

I bought a nice used slabside standard last summer for $150, saw another one at a show this weekend for $180. New ones were marked at $240. I also have a Field 5.5 and I don't have any problems with jamming on either one. I shoot them with very little lube and probably go almost a 1000 rounds between thorough cleanings. Also, the scope does not have to be removed for dis-assembly. You remove the rear screw and the screw under the barrel in front of the trigger guard. The scope and mount remain attached to the barrel. As stated above, a little blue loctite is helpful on the rear most screw.

I just went shopping for the Buckmark and/or Ruger Mark II. I ended up buying a very slightly used Mark II that I couldn't pass up at about $170 under MSRP.

Anyway, my local stores charge about $20 to $40 under MSRP for the various Buck Mark models.

I just bought a Buck Mark for $225.

I agree with Nova Terp that the Ruger design is superior. You will lose many small, expensive parts learning to clean and maintain your new Buck Mark, unless you're more careful or adept than I. Never had a problem like that with my Ruger.

Buckmark 5.5" runs $220 to $290 here, mags run $20 to $45 ea.! Mine has been 100% reliable and fairly accurate. Takedown is easy but does require an allen wrench. Reassembly is much easier than Mk2 which I also like, BTW.

I know you already made your purchase, but to anyone else out there considering the Buck Mark, there's another major design flaw.

The recoil spring is held on by a very tiny clip. If you happen to knock the spring guide setup out there's a very real chance that the spring will fly one way and the guide will become a projectile. I, the klutz that I am, accidentally did this. The spring flew into my face and the guide rod bounced off the wall and flew another 5 feet. Good thing I was pointing the gun away from me at the time. The spring retaining clip was nowhere to be found. I could reassemble the gun still and it would still function, but it was a real PITA. I think it's a bad design all around.

Now I don't hate the gun so much that I would dump it for below value, but if I had the decision to make again, I would definitely go with a Ruger.

P.S. GuyM, thanks for the tip on removing just the rear screw. I never thought of that. :-)

novaterp, I haven't purchased one yet, and from what you guys tell me, I think I'll get the Ruger 22/45 instead...

How much for the Ruger 22/45 should I be paying? I've noticed that the stubnose is about $10 more than the 5" barrel...

novaterp,

same thing happened to me first time I took it apart. I would replace that part (recoil spring guide rod retaining ring, Brownell's part 149-000-874) if I were you, as you are now putting excessive wear on the (recoil) buffer, 149-200-501, which is also designed to wear out eventually. You may as well order additional recoil springs, as mine wore out fairly early.

Also, be careful not to lose the extractor, the extractor spring and the extractor spring plunger. Mine flew out when I was using a toothbrush to clean the slide. $11 to replace, plus $11 for spare.

Oleg,

Allen wrench? Factory screws (3) are for flat-blade. Does someone make aftermarket hex screws? I would prefer them.

Regards to all,

Ledbetter

I have replaced it with a new recoil guide set and bought three additional retaining clips as well. I only shot the gun for one session before the parts arrived. As expected, I had a few more jams without the clip. Maybe I should have gotten a buffer as well but mine looks just fine.

I haven't managed to lose the extractor yet, knock on wood.

I was referring to the two screws holding in the sight "plane". Those require a hex wrench which did come with the gun.
