Hi guys
I was at one of my local gun shops ... I was at couple today , one had the sp101 but they did not have the gp100 ... I really like the sp , but I was really getting price's for S&W 686+ .
I Hear every one talking about the gp100 ... whats the weak point of the ruger ...I was looking to go with the 3" barrel , I see neither has a rear adjustable site .
Thanks guys

Greg

There's nothing weak about Rugers. The trigger needs some work on some out-of-box pistols, but that isn't anything just found with Rugers. Often they will smooth out with just honest use. Some people complain about the rubber grips with the inset wood panels on the GP100. They can be replaced.

The 4" GP100 has adjustable sights. The Ruger site, www.ruger-firearms.com, does a fair job describing the variations of the two models.

I am a long-time S&W user, but wouldn't feel shortchanged carrying a GP100 rather than a 686. I wish both companies would offer more revolvers without the full barrel lug.

I own two 686 Smiths. Both have great triggers but having shot someone's GP 100 4" - I fell in love with the gun. It has a better trigger in my opinion than the Smiths. It's rugged, dependable, smooth as butter and lock free. The price is right too. :)

P.S. Check out the site for more details www.ruger.com

I remember commenting that the GP felt lighter than my 686 but was told it was actually the same weight - just better balance.

Well, after reading everyone's posts, I got curious and decided to do a little personal research. Just got out a 4 inch GP 100 and a 4 inch 686. Both in .357 Mag. I really love both of those guns, and would have a hard time parting with either of them. The GPs trigger was better than I had remembered... a lot better. Although the characteristics of the DA pull on the two guns is different (I don't know how to describe it but I am sure someone can) they both felt pretty close as far as smoothness and weight. I couldn't perceive much if any weight difference in the two (just from holding em at the same time) although the Ruger does feel a touch more "nose heavy" to me. Just by eyeballing it, the guns look fairly close to the same size, though it is difficult to tell as they are shaped differently.

However, the Sp 101 is a different matter. I have one of those in 3 inch .357 Mag. It is quite a bit smaller than the GP or the 686 (as it is intended to be). The trigger on it is not so good. Pretty heavy in double action and not so smooth. That said this gun is almost brand new, so hopefully it will smooth out. I really like the little Sp 101 in the 3 inch. It balances great in the hand (my hand at any rate).

A friend of mine is looking to get his first revolver soon, and I have been taking several over to him to let him get a feel for them, he really liked that Sp 101, but wants a six shooter.

With having both in 4 inch barrel if I had to pick the best would be tough. But I think the 686 would win is just a little better built has a better trigger. As far as shooting the 686 maybe to close to call. What gun is more fun to shoot the Ruger what one do I like the RUGER but with 4 inch barrel:D WHY????????????

Ruger hands down

If you were talking an older pre lock 686 MAYBE but I will tell you I feel 100% more comfortable with the Ruger as it has no stupid internal lock. If you do not know all new S&W have a lock that a little special key can turn built in and make the whole gun lock up. I actually bought a S&W 38 special 642 as my main carry peice but now am hearing many stories of these locking up. ANd if it does lock up on ya out in the street and you do not have the key there is nothing that can make it work until u get home, If you get home.

If they are both 100 % good guns why go with the one that bows down to liberals and puts on some idiotic lock? I will no longer buy S&W or Taurus. Not much of a loss on Taurus but I will miss S&W.

My Ruger GP100 I have only had for about 2 weeks now and I LOVE it!

Gp 100

I recommend the GP 100. Those things are bulletproof. I got mine in stainless for easier maintainence. I love it. I wouldn't buy a S & W with the new saftey lock.

Re: interlock...?

Hi Guys thanks for all the input ...Interlock , when did they start doing that dumb thing ...?
I have a taurus that has that stupid looking thing on the hammer ?
You guys have me thinking twice , I was shooting my buddys S&W 686 older style and that was a great shooting gun ... next thing you know they will start with the hand grip to ID the user .
Thanks guys , now I have to find a range that rent's the gp100 ...Now see what you done my list is getting bigger every day I log on ...LOL

Thanks again
