I know there are a few law enforcment officers on this forum. Just out of curiosity how many of you have recieved any anti-terrorism training? I know that some may have. Is it because of a positon you hold, or a task force you are on? If some of you are patrol officers or detectives have you recieved any anti-terrorism training ? What brought this thread of thought up was the article about Miami staging random shows of force at various institutions to check citizen identification. If you were a patrol officer would you knnow what to look for? My thought is that money and hours for stuff like this could be used to conduct anti-terroist training for law enforcment officers out on the street who have contact with the public and regular beats. I know as a child in the late 50s and early 60s doctors still made house calls and we had a regular officer who walked the beat as he called it. He knew the folks and thier kids and the business owners. he had a lot of knowledge about his beat and what was going on and how to handle the folks. this was like a bottums up style of policing. Now it seems everything has shifted to bottoms down. In your opinion would patrol officers/detectives benefit form more anti-terrorist training? I realize that this is not the primary function of a police officer in daily business. Would there be a benefit to it?
How much anti-terrorist trainning depends wholely on the department... And what you consider anti-terrorist trainning!
Right now, 2/3 of my department is in Cheyenne for a week of homeland security instruction - I'll find out when they get back if any of it was geared toward terrorism or not. Probably a lot of disaster stuff and how to work with FEMA too...
On the other hand - is every sniper class anti terrorist oriented? No - but it sure could be. How about in school active shooter interdiction? Maybe - but thankfully such tactics haven't been neccessary in the US vs foreign terrorists. Negotiator classes? Not geared toward classical terrorists, but wouldn't that be handy to know how to deal with the committed and on edge mind! Is K9 work geared toward terrorists? What if the dog is an explosives expert?
If you look at my trainning record there are thousands of hours listed on dozens of topics. None of it says "terrorism" related, but almost all of it could be.
I am a former deputy Sheriff in TX and was a deputy in the county where the Western White House is. We recieved no, zero, zilch, nada traning in Counter-terrorism or Anti-terrorism. But as Yorec said the training we did recieve, ...........could be. Alot of the training you recieve as a LEO has a broad spectrum over which it can be employed. Just look at our Counter Terror teams in Delta and SEAL Six, can they be used for other missions? you bet. alot of it is perception and employment. how is a threat percieved and how to employ those tactics against it. In these days the word terrorist calls out the clans, if you were to say a have "a terrorist with hostages" over the radio.................every LEA within a 50 miles radius would have a SWAT or SRT there in short order. It is not taken lightly the word terrorist or terrorism in the LEO field from my experience any how. The perception from the general public i believe would be why is our LEA training for anti-terror? what is the threat here? what do they know that they arent sharing with us? Can i still go to the Arabic guy's convience store? But back on topic, no i recieved no formal training but recieved alot of training that could be used to counter a terrorist action.
None. I went through the academy in 1994. The subject wasn't even broached at that time.
After 9/11/01 no specific counter-terror training has been made available. We have received some first-responder personal protective gear and info manuals, but no training on how to properly use it.
The type of trianing I am asking about would be of the preventative type....
such as a basic terrorism 101 for the guys that mix with the population day in and day out. Stuff that they should keep an eyeball peeled for. I am probably oversimplifying..but that is the nature of training I am asking about.
