How many Mags?

Well since I've jumped into semi's with both feet, Norinco 1911 9mm (price was too good to pass up), a H&K USP .45 full size and a CZ .40S&W. I'm wondering whats a good number of mags to have for each one?

Use the guns for target/IDPA etc and shoot around 800 rds/week on an average with the three guns. I'm thinking around 6 mags for each one on an average, weeding out the garbage/worn out ones as they come up.

Suggestions??

Well, I'm a little nervous because I'm down to about 20 for my AR. I feel a little better now that I have 10 mags for my M-1A, used to just have 3. My 1911 flock only has about 8 regular use mags, plus some old junk, about to go on a Wilson spree. The P-35 has but 6 mags, really need a bunch more. I'm of the 20-30 per gun type opinion, looks like I have work to do.

I'm with Navy Joe all the way! But I'd like to add that when you get that many mags, you have to number them so you know which ones are which. You must number them and then function test all of them. I'm about to get my first 1911 and I plan on getting about 10 mags to start out with over the course of the summer. If you can't quite afford to get 20-30 at a time, just buy one a month and you'll be set.

For my M1A collection, I have 24 20 rnders, giving 6 per gun. I need to order more, but just have not done it.

For all of the pistols, at least enough to load a 50 rnd box. IE: 7 or 8 mags. All accept the Glock 20, where I have 8 hi-caps, 6 normals.

I am currently ordering more mags, I am trying to get every gun up to 100 rnds loaded. I am having trouble getting Colt gov 380's and Eaa mags for my 10mm and 40's. The rest are waiting in a box for me to pick up at my dealer.

100 20 rounders for the FAL
3 30 FAL mags too
8 for the BHP (I don't shoot it much) 4 are South African 17 rounders
30 or so commercial 1911 magazines Wilson, Randall, Chip M, etc
30 or so USGI 1911 magazines
10 15 round .30 carbine magazines
5 30 round magazines for the same gun.

Kidney For Sale

 Thats what I love about TFL nobody does anything half baked! Hmmmm, Anybody interested in a perfectly good kidney, afterall I've got two. Must find a way way to pay for this addictive hobby.:D ;)

I know this is the handgun forum and all, but is it true 10/22 hi-cap mags are hard to find in the US?

We can get Butler Creek 25 rounder new for about $24.00 Cdn, thats about, $15 US.

Even for guns that are strictly range guns/home defense, I get at least six magazines. Two to get beat up on the range, and two pairs to get rotated around. One of these pairs is always loaded. I don't have kids, and I'm not married, so all those range guns are scattered around. Whatever room I'm in, I have a gun on hand.
Now for my carry guns and my primary home defense guns, I pick up good magazines whenever I see a good deal.

hicap pistol mags are like m&ms for me can't get enough of them , I have 5 for my 14-45 , and 1 25 for the 10/22 , revolvers don't use mags , but I have to find more backups for my coonan , I'm finding chicken teeth are easier to come by .

I have much lower (handgun) magazine requirements, but of course, it is a personal thing... Mine are probably what most would consider a BARE minimum... I didn't have a set number to start out with, I just bought until I felt "content". This is what I've ended up with.

For pocket pistols or fun guns, I feel that 3 mags is enough, 4 is better. My Kel-Tec P32, Ruger MKII, MK9 all have 3 mags. I want 1 more for the MK9.

For house pistols or pistols used in competition, I find that 4 full-caps seems to be my absolute bare minimum I can stand, and 6 makes me feel better. Plus at least 3 10 rounders for range or competition.

But I will say that, if there was no STUPID 10 round magazine limit, I'd have more like 8 or 10 mags for each of my house and IDPA guns. I can't afford 10 Glock 19 pre-ban mags right now, and I can't bring myself to buy 10 that are 5 rounds short of a picnic.

When it comes to rifles, I jump back up to the double digit category, and I'm always in the market for more.

I guess I'm a lightweight. I have about 3-5 mags for most of my guns. I don't count 10-rounders, because I never use them (should sell them).

4 mags for the KP-90. 2 loaded, 2 "at rest". I swap them every 30 days. I don't know how much of an issue "spring memory" is, given the current state of metals, but I don't want to be looking at a round in the mag, and slide locked back.

I keep keep the following as minimum for my firearms.

6 magazines for each semiauto pistol.

4 speed loaders for each revolver.

10 magazines for my Bushmaster.

You must be joking.

Cain R,

25 round 10/22 mags for $15?????? I know people who would kill to get some of those and I am one. I can't believe that good old kanuckland has actually a more reasonable gun law than the US. Too bad you cant just ship a crate down here.

Get four, because that's usually what you need for IDPA. Don't buy any extras for the other guns, as you'll be spending more than the price of another gun. When you sell it, you'll not easily get the money back out of it for extra mags.

If you're worried about the circumstances of post-apocolyptic America, you can buy M1 Garand clips for 30-40 cents each....
