How long to leave a firearm on consignment?

Hello all, I am new to this forum, and so far it seems to be a great place for any type of firearm info/tips/reviews/etc.!

I recently placed my like new/mint condition Browning Gold Sporting Clays 12 gauge shotgun up for sell on consignment at a local gun shop. I am looking to use the funds I get from the sale to purchase a S&W 686 SSR w/ 4" barrel, or possibly a standard 686 7 shot with a 4" barrel.

So my question for everyone is, how long do you all think I should leave my shotgun at this shop till I attempt selling it elsewhere? I was planning to wait at least one month, however ideas/tips/suggestions about how long to wait for it to sell, as well as other possible options on how to sell it more rapidly, would be most appreciated! :D
 
GunBroker would be my approach to selling a nice shotgun.. If your shotgun was mine, I'd worry about it at a local gun shop.

Have you thought about posting a for sale sign on the bulletin board of your local trap/skeet/sporting club? That's your target audience (pun intended) and where you'll get the most notice from potential buyers
 
Lol yeah you all are right for sure. I actually am going to make a flier for it to post at my old trap/skeet range. I also posted up an ad at the armslist and plan to post a few more ads online. Lastly I think I'll go pick up my shotgun from that shop this week. I know I have to pay a $35 fee to get the shotgun back but I'm wondering if there is a waiting period again, even though I'm the original owner?
 
That is a pretty specialized gun. Methinks having in a gun shop is limiting exposure.
The $35.00 charge to get back is a rip off.
Try just a simple classified ad in your local paper.

Getting the gun back will involve whatever steps are required to purchase a gun legally in your state. If there is a waiting period and background check where you live you will have to comply. The shotgun legally is owned by the shop. They have it logged into their inventory and cannot release it without proper documentation.

It might be a little high, but it is perfectly acceptable. You won't have a gun shipped to a shop and get it without paying for a transfer. This is the same thing. The shop had to log it into their inventory, they have to do the same paperwork to give it back to you as they would if they sold it to someone else, including a background check if applicable in your state. It was taking up space on their shelf and they made a good faith effort to sell it. Even if they were unsuccessful, they deserve some compensation for their efforts.

I've sold guns on commission before, but prefer to carry one around at a gunshow if I'm trying to sell. I've done the ad in the paper a few times and don't really like some of the characters who respond to the ads. If all else fails I'll try the consigment route. But I understand if it doesn't work I'll need to pay something to get it back.

But if it does sell I've found I often get as much or more than if I try to sell myself. Everybody tries to lowball an individual seller, but most will pay the asking price if it is in a store, or close to it. Often the store will sell it for enough to give me my asking price and still make a fair profit. But it often takes several months depending on the gun.

Looking at a recent consignment contract I did, it states that if the owners wants to cancel early (within 60 days) a $35 fee will be charged.

It doesn't have language about the cost outside of 60 days. Need to ask next time I consign a gun for sale.
 
Make sure that you have proof of ownership.
A friend lost some valued guns, because he didn't have solid proof that his guns were in the gun store on consignment.
The store owner suddenly died and the guns wound up as store property and treated as part of his estate.
 
Sign up for Gun broker. Make sure you post you are not an FFL holder and will only ship to an FFL holder. Make sure you get FFL copy and only send to valid FFL. You can save the comission and wait with a 1 week auction online. Some states require special paperwork like California so FYI.
 
RC I tried gunbroker and my account was flagged. Not sure why. I've now been waiting over 3 days for their "customer support" to address my inquiry to solve this issue. They don't even have a phone number I can use to contact them...
 
thethaii, good luck with that. I have a support case that has been open for 2 months without any reply to it. Gunbroker support is nonexistent. If you do use gunbroker, cross your fingers everything goes well because if it does not, your are s.o.l.
 
Have you tried Backpage? Priced right stuff moves pretty quick. A guy posted a WTB a LC9, I contacted him and he bought it the next day. I got what I paid for it new.

The biggest benefit is not having to worry about any shipping/transfer fees (depending on your state) like you do with the online auctions.

Also, if you hang around here a bit longer you would have access to list in here when the marketplace section opens up to you.
 
Well I got a call from the Gun shop today and a guy went to buy my browning after seeing it advertised on armslist.com. I was hoping he would have contacted me personally beforehand, so I could pull the shotgun out to so the sale with a FFL holder. Since this didn't happen the shop will be taking 20% of the $800 I sold it for. Oh well now I know never to sell a firearm on consignment. To be honest I think it was an impulsive move since I was so eager to sell the Browning. On the upside I found a online shop located in North Carolina where I purchased a Smith & Wesson 686 SSR (I couldn't find any at local shops in California and even online stores didn't have them.) I had to pay msrp for the 686 but considering what seems to be a gun/ammo buying/hoarding? frenzy I feel lucky to have found one. Now I'm thinking of selling my little Beretta Tomcat, especially since it's been seriously unreliable with countless jams. Still despite the jams I'm sure a good gunsmith could fix this and the little guy is really accurate for such a small pistol.
