How long does a typical home invasion take to resolve? From the time a homeowner heards the window break to when the burglar (or owner) is shot dead or fled.

From what I have read, they can be over very quickly--in seconds, or may take many hours to resolve. I've seen news articles on more than one home invasion where the occupants were initially taken hostage and were only able to repel the invaders after being held for hours.

And, of course, they don't always end with the invaders being repelled. The Petit home invasion in Connecticut lasted long enough for one hostage to be sent to the bank and return before the home invaders killed all but one of the family members and burned the house down. The survivor had been badly beaten and tied up early in the encounter.

If the occupants are unarmed, the invaders may just take some stuff and run, or decide to do whatever they feel like doing, that may take hours, as mentioned above.

If the occupants are armed, and start shooting, the invaders will almost always flee immediately.

I've posted the full story in the past so I will not launch into all the details. The Reader's Digest version is: I was the victim of a home invasion robbery while I was home. We surprised each other. Only difference was my guns were in the safe. (Never without a gun any more even in the house.) I got shot several times and played dead. Have no idea how long the invaders were in my house but I can tell you it seemed like forever. At least long enough to clean out most of the expensive art work and some electronics. Start to finish was realistically 10 minutes. I was able to call 911 before I blacked out. I was told later that I was lucky that I made the call when I did as I didn't have much longer and would have bled out. I would not call this a typical home invasion so my guess is that anyone that has any type of home invasion would not categorize it as typical.

Based on most folks here swearing black and blue then need a pistol at their bedside, to fight their way to their body armour and their AR with multiple magazines.

My guess would be at least three days.

locked doors, locked windows, monitored alarm systems, dogs.... all they are for is to buy you a few seconds to wake up and react. know where your kids and wife are, take a defensive position and fire at what comes towards you.

unless youre a high profile person wanted to be held for ransom, a snitch the mafia wants rubbed out, or a drug dealer being robbed by other drug dealers.... most likely the sound of the alarm will cause the intruders to run away. only the most determined person with a driven intent on killing you will stick around for a gun battle.

How long does a typical home invasion take to resolve?

Odd question:

The "typical" home invasion takes months or longer to resolve, if ever.

It takes about 3 seconds to crash through a locked door, it takes 15 seconds plus (depending on the layout of the home) to get off your couch make it to the bedroom and retrieve you handgun from the night stand (assuming its just laying there ready to go.

And assuming the bandit will let you fetch it.

Those assumptions are not likely to occur, so you call 911 after the bandit leaves (assuming you can). Eight minutes later they show up and conduct an investigation.

If the guy can be identified, arrested and charged, its going to take several months for the case to work itself through the court system.

If the bandit can't be identified its never going to be resolved.

Now, lets assumed you constantly have your handgun on your person and train and practice. Regardless whether you are setting, standing, cooking dinner or what ever you should be able to get you gun out in less then one second. And you are ready to resolve the invasion by the time the bandit kicks in the door.

The latter is not likely to happen. I do "self defense firearm training" after a bit most of my students are able to react and respond is a second or less. WHILE TRAINING. In reality, that all goes out the window, I check up on my students, though they know how, and can react. IN reality when I check on them I find they don't have their gun, its was put up somewhere and not on their person.

So the real answer is, several months to never.

I am pretty sure that by the parameters stated by the OP, few home invasions take months to resolve.

From the time a homeowner heards the window break to when the burglar (or owner) is shot dead or fled.

Nothing stated about all the followup matters, just the event itself.

I don't know that polling a bunch of folks on TFL will really answer the question you're asking, OP. What it will tell you is "how long do a bunch of folks on TFL believe a home invasion takes to resolve."

Because of the vagueness of the OP, there are too many variables to consider. The OP does not state if the H.O. has a firearm, or if they just call 911 and hide in the bathroom. The OP states it is an burglar, but many home invasions are not just for robbery. Many Home invaders get a rush outta terrorizing, raping and torturing victims before they leave or flee. This can take hour or even days. Seems the OP is hinting that the burglar alarms the homeowner when entering and then the armed homeowner immediately confronts the intruder and one of them ends up dead or scared away. If this were the only scenario, then 5 minutes or less.
