How long do you have to live in a state before you can purchase a gun?

I forget what all the Federal paperwork background thing says but do you have to be a resident of a state for a certain amount of time before you can purchase a handgun in that state.

My girlfriend just moved to about a week ago Georgia and is considering getting a handgun in the near future.

State of residence. The State in which an individual resides. An individual resides in a State if he or she is present in a State with the intention of making a home in that State. If an individual is on active duty as a member of the Armed Forces, the individual's State of residence is the State in which his or her permanent duty station is located. An alien who is legally in the United States shall be considered to be a resident of a State only if the alien is residing in the State and has resided in the State for a period of at least 90 days priorto the date of sale or delivery of a firearm.

from what I understand out of this...

If your a US Citizen then as soon as you enter another state and will be living there then you can be call a resident of that state. You should be able to buy handguns as soon as you have your driver license for that state (or tempory Driver license for that matter).

If your an Alien from another country, then you need to be in another state for at least 90days to become a resident in that state.

I thought you have to wait a period of time too, thanks for that link Hkmp5sd:D .
 
A little bit off subject

but I was reading the ATF web page of rules a while back and 'interpreted' that it was actually legal for me to purchase a handgun from an individual in a state that was not my residence but that I had a 'home' in as in a vacation home that I spent time at through out the year. I'm sure it would not work with a store purchase because of the paper work and documention thing... but seems like it could be 'okay' where individual sales are allowed.
 
The problem I've seen around here involves a buyer with a new driver's license, but no second form of ID with the same address... "But I haven't gotten my first utility bill yet."

Of course, they can always buy a fishing permit. :)

The secondary form of identification, for Virginia residents and residents of other states, must show an address identical to that shown on the primary form of identification. Some acceptable forms of secondary ID are:


· a current lease,

· evidence of currently paid personal property tax or real estate tax,

· a current utility or telephone bill,

· a current voter registration card,

· a current bank check,

· a current passport,

· a current automobile registration and

· current hunting or fishing license.

People with homes in two or more states and live there during parts of the year are considered residents on each state while they are actually living there.
 
that's the way I read it... but

that being said... let's give an example.

You live in Pa. during the Spring, Summer & Fall and spend Dec - March down in florida with the rest of the crowd. (you have a PA D.L. and all your other id says PA) Is it possible to go to Don's gun shop in Tampa and buy a handgun and take it back to the condo in Saint Pete?
