How important is...

it to you to buy American?

I ask because I've been debating with myself over buying a S&W 686+ or Ruger GP100 for my first handgun. If buying American wasn't important to me I'd lean much closer to buying the Ruger. Luckily, well not really, I have over a year before I have to make the decision.

They are American made. Between those two, pick your poison. The Smith would probably be my choice if money were no object. The Ruger would be what I'd buy in real life, though.

Well, most of my guns are American made, but if I wanted a gun that was made in another country it would not bother me.

So, based on your OP are you saying that Ruger makes some of their guns or gun components in other countries? Again, not a big deal, but just curious.

Ruger is not American made. The DOJ has ordered AZ removed from the union.

Seriously, AFAIK, Rugers are all totally manufactured in the U.S.A. Some other companies have all or parts of their guns made overseas, but not Ruger.

LOL, I just assumed it was a German company...

Silly me for not doing my research.

Ok, I believe you were thinking of Luger which was designed by an Austrian dude and made famous by the German Military.

I dont know if some of you have the same OEM magazines as me with your Ruger LCP and LC9 guns but mine say "MADE IN ITALY" on the side of them. I'm okay with that as they are quality made units as good as any Sig magazines that I have had.

This is not unusual there are a lot of manufactures that claim their products are American made while at least some of the components are foreign made. I suspect Ruger does almost all of their work here, but as you pointed out magazines and other components could be foreign made.

probably made by Mec Gar and they are as good if not better than the vast majority of Magazine manufacturers

Not very important compared with getting the gun and the quality I want.

I drive a Toyota Sienna. I like it better than any American car.

A guy I work with actually made the same mistake because the name Sturm Ruger sounded German to him.
That, coupled with the Mark III looking much like a Luger, is where my mistake came from.

I happen to own more Rugers than any other, but I don't buy them cuz they are 'Merican, I like them because they fill my wants and needs the best.

I realize this is a gun forum and not one on Austrian Economics, but there's some good reading there on protectionism and free markets. It might do you guys some good.

Government schools and media do a good job of muddying the waters when it comes to economics.

It's always nice to buy American, but when I am forking down my own hard earned cash I tend to gravitate to exactly what I want and don't let it influence my decision. But with that being said right now all I own are Rugers and S&W's. Also used to own a Henry Rifle, also an American company. So I guess it turns out even though I don't aim to buy American made, so far it has been the case.

ANY American car, your telling me if I put a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 in front of you and a Sienna next to it, your going to pick the Siennea!?!

Last time i checked, that car is manufactured in Indiana. The corporate HQ is in another country, and the owner of the company isn't american, but that car is built by americans, so to me, it's american.
