How hot WWB 40 S&W ammo?

Someone at my range let me shoot a P229 and a Para Ordnance, both chambered in 40 S&W. The ammo he had was WWB. Both pistols felt surprisingly soft for a 40 caliber, and I was wondering if anyone knows how this ammo stacks up against other loadings?

I load my 44s up to max loads in my Rugers, so I'm definitely used to a lot of recoil. I'm just wondering if this ammo is weak, or if I can just deal with 40 S&W better than I'd expect.
 
The WWB ammo has significantly more felt recoil than my carry load of 155gr Federal Hydra Shoks. I've actually found it to be slightly harsher than most .40 ammo, in my personal experience.
