How hard is it to get a CCW in Wayne County Michigan?

I have been thinking about doing this for awhile now, I have heard that it is difficult to get a permit. I have no criminal record of any kind, so would love to hear from those that have acually done it.

Check with your local police department since they likely issue them. Check with gun shops in the area as they probably have info regarding the courses available required for them permit.
Also, don't stop at just the basic mediocre content course required as a minimum. if you're serious about it, get additional GOOD instruction as well.

I have not personally done it (I don't live in Wayne County) but I have walked someone through every step of the processes who does live in Wayne. MI is shall issue, so they must give you a permit unless they have a very specific reason not to ("we don't like you" is not a reason). Here is what I found:

1. The Sheriff's website is full of misinformation. You cannot pay with credit card or check, only cash or money order. It will cost about $110 for the application, pictures, etc. You cannot get your picture taken at the office, just get it done at a local Walgreens or CVS (ask for CCW pictures) before hand.

2. One positive note is that Wayne has two Sheriff's offices, one is a satellite office off of Michigan Ave. If you live closer to Ann Arbor than Detroit you can go here instead of downtown. But from what I hear the downtown one will result in getting your permit a little bit quicker and the processes may go smoother.

3. Either way, be prepared to wait in line at the office. We had to go back three times because of the wrong information they kept telling us. Took three hours when it should have taken half an hour.

But like I said, in the end you will get one if you qualify. You will need to take the MI CPL class before going to the Sheriff's office though. It's usually $100 and can take anywhere from 8-12 hours depending on your instructor. Unfortunately I don't personally know of any good instructors in the area but The Firing Line (same name as this forum!) is a gun shop in Westland that does classes. The little experience I've had with them has been positive. Let me know if you have any more questions, I'm alway willing to help arm another good guy in this State..

Good advice already posted. For those I know that have attempted it and succedded said the hassle factor was way high. Be patient because it will take a long time. Make sure you get more than one picture in case they lose the one you submitted. Take the course, submit the application and materials required, and forget about it. That letter in the mail will be a welcomed surprise one day.

Ahhh...Wayne County (no offense).

I went to the one on Henry Ruff Rd to get mine it was easy. I did have to drive back home to get the ORIGINAL CPL Class certificate, they would not accept a copy.

Pick up a CPL "package" from your local police department. It will contain all the information you need to get started.
First time for me took 4 months. First renewal took 6 months, even though they told me renewals were taking less time. Last time, I must say, was far more pleasant. They told me if it looked like I wasn't going to get my license in time to come back in and they would give me an extension. Didn't need it and I had my new license within two months or so. I detest Wayne County like you wouldn't believe, but I have to say they're starting to catch on to this CPL business, finally.

Some info:

And here's a one-stop gun shop and training center if you happen to live in the downriver area:

If farther north, The Firing Line has already been mentioned. I highly recommend both.

I'd like to add to not even attempt the "online application". It just won't work. I wouldn't even print the stuff from the site off, I'd walk in, ask the person at the front desk (not the clerk) where the CPL forms are (you will need two, the application form and the background check disclosure) and fill those out while waiting in line. I had the person I was helping print off the background check disclosure online and it turned out that the form online was outdated and they needed to get another one. This resulted in waiting in line again even thought they had everything filled out. So I would just ignore the website completely (even the part that lets you check your application status isn't working).

The complete opposite was true for me. Last time I went to the Henry Ruff Rd (Road patrol office) location and was treated better and got my permit far quicker than ever before. Hopefully, I'll never have to go back to Detroit.

I took my class at the Firing Line in Westland, they were very good about what you will need to get your CPL and they do the pictures right there during class. I live in Washtenaw county and it took about 6-7 weeks to get mine. I submitted the paperwork and a check for $105 at the county building in Ann Arbor.

Glad to hear that! It is unfortunate, though; I didn't hear that the Detroit office is more efficient and quicker from just a rumor, the County Clerk employee at the satellite office told me this. They were nice enough and did the best with what they had, but they readily admitted that it is kinda easier to go downtown.

Macomb county was an easy and friendly process. Just get the ccw application pamphlet from wayne county or local police and follow instructions, pay money. I'd hazard to guess wayne county is probably more disorganized so may take longer. Just my wild guess.

Last I knew you could pop over to the Sheriff's Office in Oakland County.
It's up on Telegraph in Pontiac. It's easy to get ther from anywhere in the metro area. They're very friendly and pretty quick. They've been processing CPL's for nearly 10 years since the county changed over to shall issue. I got my 2nd CPL in Michigan there. It took about 6 weeks from app to permit in hand.
I wish you good luck in your endeavor and hope everything goes well for you.
