How Good are the HK USP Compacts?

Hey all,

I have a buddy that is looking to get a new handgun. He has been looking at catalogs and such but he has not went to any shop yet to really look. Anyway he seems to really like the HK USP Compacts in Stainless. We were discussing them and although I know of them I have never shot one or have any practical experience with them. The closest I have came is shooting a new USP full size 40 several yeara ago. So I told him that I would ask on here and see what the opinions were about them.
He is thinking about the 9mm and the 45 ACP, he cannot decide yet. He is a Beretta owner and is curious as to how accurate the USPC in both the 9 and 45 are. Would the USP be as good as his 92f stainless? Does the short barrel have any negative affect on accuracy or controlability?
That is about all I can think of that we talked about so anything that you all can add will be appreciated. If there is any other aspects of the USPC that he should know then by all means pass it on.

Thanks again.

I have a USP45C (V1) in stainless, it's been a great gun. It has been utterly reliable, it's more accurate than I am, and has good ergonomics. As .45's go, it's a soft shooter, though there is a little muzzle flip (it's light - poly frame), it's quite controllable and fast follow-up shots are easy enough (this prolly isn't an issue with the 9mm).

Another thing I like is the frame mounted decocker/safety. The gun functions as a traditional Da/SA autoloader, but it can also be carried cocked & locked, and the safety is disengaged by sweeping teh thumb down, like a 1911. The thing I disliked the most about the Berettas is the slide mounted safety that you have to push up to release. I find that to be counter-intuitive and clumsy and was among the reasons I got rid of my Cougar and 92FS. YMMV.

I'll second

Mike in Va's thoughts. I have the USP .45 Compact (also V1) with the HE finish and it has been a tremendous weapon. It is very accurate, very reliable and is my daily carry weapon. A shorter barrel is typically associated with both decreased accuracy and making a weapon harder to control, but in this case the effects are negligable if present at all. The muzzle does flip a bit more than the 9mm (a .45 is a pretty good sized chunk of lead!) but it is well within reason and is quite easily controlled. Insofar as accuracy is concerned, I believe it would be at least equal to the Beretta if not better. I don't have any data to back that up other than my own personal experience with both weapons.

All in all, I believe it to be one of the finest weapons on the market and is a very good choice.

I've had my 40c for over 2 years now. Couldn't be happier. Not one misfeed or malfunction. I can and always have attributed this to HK, not the caliber. Not as easy to conceal as my G26, but a fine performer that will be burried with me nontheless.

H&K compact.

I have one of thier compact models [variant#1] in 357sig.

Excellent Overall weapon. Needs trigger work.

12-34hom.

They are excellent. My H&ks have been very accurate, reliable and downright fun to shoot.

Shorter barrels are always associated with decreased accuracy because of the shorter sight radius. They aren't necessarily less accurate, just harder to shot as accurately as a firearm with a longer sight radius.

That being said, my compact .45 is as accurate as any of my other guns.

My only gripe about the USPc .40 is that they never made non-LEO hi-caps for it. That's why I went with the 9mm. Anyway, I've fired both the 9mm and .40 USPc, and both are excellent guns. You can debate all day long if it's better than the Beretta, P99, Glock 19, etc., but it's definately right up there.

I'm confused, they never made hi caps for the USPc 9mm either, although there are plenty of unbadged (illegal) post ban, imported 13 rounders out there.

The USPs are very fine pistols. Accurate, durable, & reliable right out of the box. What more can you ask for?
