How durable are the various handgun coatings

Contact Bob Cogan at AP&W and Robar; both shops will discuss your specific need.

If you mean impact, wear, abrasion resistance, Metalife is hard to beat, as are most good hard chrome, nickel-based, etc finishes.

The polymer/Teflon are slicker and more corrosion resistant, but do not wear as well.

The combo finishes (like Robar's NP3) are a good compromise.

I don't know what they use, but my SA came from the factory with the finish chipped on the slide serrations.

Like anything else, I suppose, sharp corners create weak points that nothing will stick too. Have your gun melted down and you'll see the finishes last longer.

When Reason Fails.....

I had my HK refinished by Robar w/ rogard and NP3 and can attest to the durability of them. I have also heard favorable things about Bear Coat.

Hello Allen,

Properly applied hard chrome is probably the toughest finish. Easy to care for also. My only experience with HC is with Bob Cogan at AP&W. I would recommend him highly.

Walter Birdsong's Black-T is a very good teflon finish. It will show wear quicker than hard chrome, but you still have the corrision protection. I was very pleased with it on my Sig P220.

Next week I will be receiving my Kimber from Steve Clark Custom. His Ultra Coat finish is being applied and will post on its durability in the near future.

TiGold may be the most durable finish available, but I have not tried it as yet.

I had a 5904 done in NP3 frame/internals and Rogard slide a year or two back. The Rogard looks GREAT, seems to wear better than bluing and I like the dull finish. The NP3? It seems like it is polishing off of high points quickly down to bare metal. For internals, though, it is great. Like an action job. I had a couple of initial problems with the Rogard, Robar made it right. When I showed the wear on the NP3 to a rep, he indicated it was normal wear, but also said he would fix it to my liking as warranty work. I just left it, the frame is aluminum anyway. I would pick hard chrome but I like the dark finish better on exterior surfaces, personal preference only.

What does hard chrome look like exactly? Is it black, silver, matte, polished? I am new to the name.

Also, what aftermarket finish resembles the Glock's finish the closest?

Hi bk40:

I had TiGold refinish an M8 for me several years ago. The black color scratched easily. I don't know if the underlying titanium remained on the gun or not. I like Black-T and Hard chrome much better.
