how does your Russian M44 shoot?

I haven't been able to get better than a 4 inch group at 100 yards with iron sights. This is probably partially me and partially the cheap surplus ammo that I shoot. I hope it's not the gun.

How about you folks who put nice ammo through your M44, and who can shoot decent groups with iron sights?

Did you fire it with the bayonet extended?

I've read that the Russian troops were required to have bayonets fixed at all times, and that the M44 needs the bayo extended - something to do with barrel harmonics.

I haven't purchased any ammo yet for mine, so I'm can't give you a comparison. Been too busy fixing up a Turkish Mauser I picked up this month.

This is with bayonet extended.

After my initial post, I had an expert at the range look at it and he pointed out some slop in the gun. At home, I found a few loose screws and gave the internals a good cleaning (should have done that to begin with).
I'll see how it fares after these adjustments.

BTW, think I can affect the accuracy by how hard I tighten the screw holding the barrel down?

It's my understanding that it depends on the type, Russian, Finnish, etc... then the wear on the barrel.

I have a Russian m44, and although I have never tested it from the bench, off hand I can get better placement than my AR-15...:( This is without having the bayonet extended. So far my m44 has 2 kills and my AR has 0.

I'm shooting the corrosive Russian surplus ammo.

I understand too that the Finnish Sako rifles were not accepted if they did NOT shoot a 1.5" group at 100m.

My M44 is, suprisingly, one of the most accurate rifles I own. Just last weekend I took it out and consistently achieved 1" groups at 80 yards. Basically, if I point it straight, the gun will perform.
