How does one touch-up the finish on a Heritage cowboy revolver?

I have found one that's a proven shooter,,,
A friend of mine has it for sale at a very good price.

The finish is worn off in a couple of places,,,
Since I would buy the gun to gift to a different friend,,,
I would really like to touch-up those worn spots before I hand it to her.

Anyone have any technique they could share with me?

Thanks my friends,,,

If I was gonna do anything with one, assuming it's the "alloy" frame model, I would strip the whole thing and redo it in one of the DIY spray finishes like Aluma-Hyde. It'll probably hold up better than the original finish.

Depends on the material. If it is steel you can use any of the touch-up chemicals that turn steel black, I like Brownells Dicropan liquid. If it is a die cast zinc alloy or aluminum, then I would use one of the spray on finishes like Norrells Moly resin or GunKote.

Typically the barrel may be steel and the frame an aluminum or zinc alloy. A magnet test will tell you what's what.

You say "her."

Now consider this: If she is special to you, and give her a Heritage, she might wise up one day and ask, "Is that all I was worth to you?"

Now, if she's not that special, O.K. But if she is, you might consider a Colt Diamondback .22 or a Model 41 S&W auto.

You see, there's more than just guns to consider here. Pick your way carefully.

well the finish, well depends on the material its made of.

As to it being good enough to give to a female. So is it being supposited that the man should scrimp and save his money so he can buy a female friend a weapon that routinely retails for 700 on the used market, instead of simply getting her something fun and low cost thats already proven to hit the target?

Bob, Aarond can certainly speak for himself. In fact, he does a fine job of precisely that. :D But I'm here now and he isn't.

Aarond does this, and has done this many times in the past. He's a very cool guy and this is something he enjoys doing. This guy would go broke if every new shooter he mentored ended up with a Model 41 Smith & Wesson. Furthermore, I'd be wishin' I went to school in Oklahoma and I've pretty much got some solid roots planted here in the midwest as it is.

I've seen & read Aarond's technique, and I couldn't find fault with it if it I tried. :p

Unless it beat all to heck, I wouldn't bother. Just give it to her. Nothing wrong with a little wear. If it's beat all to heck, I wouldn't bother. I'd just buy a new Heritage and give it to her.

Colt Diamonback or a Smith & Wesson Model 41? You're kidding? I don't give those to myself.

I picked up the Heritage on Saturday Morning,,,

I picked up the Heritage on Saturday Morning,,,
And to my great surprise it came with a .22 Magnum cylinder,,,
It also had the original box and all of the included paperwork in it as well.

The wear is on the high places you see from being holstered,,,
I took one small spot and tried some regular cold blue,,,
I mean what the heck it's worth a try isn't it.

Well lo and behold it darkened the frame metal very nicely,,,
It's not a perfect match in color by any means,,,
But at least it isn't a glaring white spot.

I also tried a Sharpie permanent marker,,,
It did darken the alloy metal,,,
But wiped right off again.

I'll let that one spot I treated sit for a few more days,,,
Just to see if it turns an awful purple or something truly ugly,,,
If it doesn't turn ugly I'll touch up the rest of the frame with cold blue solution.

The Evil Pawn Shop Guy always gives me a "buy back" guarantee on used guns,,,
Sunday after fighting Lawn Wars for 6 hours I went to the range,,,
I was very pleasantly surprised with the little gun.

Shooting off of a plastic MTM bench rest at 25 yards,,,
It shot a nice group of about 2" diameter,,,
More important, it was to point of aim.

I fired 48 rounds of .22 LR through it with no timing or function problems,,,
The three .22 magnum rounds I had knocking around in my loose ammo box worked just as well.

I'll take before and after pics of the gun,,,
Just to demonstrate how the cold blue works,,,
You can see the difference in color but it isn't glaring.

I must say my Y-Chromosome shrunk a bit as I bought it though,,,
It is the small 3.5" barrel birds-head grip version,,,
With pink mother-of-toilet-seat grips.

But Sarah is very much a girly girl,,,
And she did love the pink earmuffs I bought her,,,
So I think this will be a nice first handgun for her to own.

With this gun she will have a reasonably accurate plinker to have fun with,,,
And the custom tooled holster and gunbelt I will make for her,,,
Should assuage any negative about the Heritage itself. ;)

Seriously though, I wish I was rich instead of poor-but-honest,,,
I would love nothing more than to buy my young friends excellent handguns,,,
But my meager finances simply won't allow me to even approach the Diamondback or Model 41 level.

This young lady was going to get the new Pathfinder I recently purchased,,,
But after shooting it she wasn't all that impressed with the gun,,,
It seems of my guns she likes the semi-auto Bersa,,,
And my single-action Colt Frontier Scout.

This little Heritage isn't in either of those price ranges,,,
But I do think she will like it none the less,,,
And I know she'll love the gunbelt.

No way, no way you can go wrong!

Now to everyone else... what was funnier?! Six hours of lawn wars, or pink "mother-of-toilet" grips?!

Yeah, it wasn't close. :p "M-O-T", I'll be keeping my eye out for that notation in Gunbroker listings.

Aarond, make sure you post those pics. I want to see the blue touch up, but mostly I want to see those MOTS grips.:D
