How do you transfer ownership of a firearm? (North Carolina)

I hope this is the right forum. I was wondering, whats involved of transfering ownership of a firearm from a private seller to a private buyer in the state of North Carolina? Im buying a RIA 1911 from a member on here pretty soon, and I was wondering what I would have to do exactly. Do I still need a permit to buy a handgun like you need if you dont have your CCW in this state? If not, what kind of paperwork needs to be done, and who would most likely do the transfer? Would a gun range do a transfer like that? How much does it usually cost?
 
Private transfers of handguns do not have to go through a FFL in North Carolina. State law does require the purchaser of a handgun (if not a CCW holder) to have a current handgun purchase permit from the county Sheriff. The purchaser must give the permit to the seller when the transfer takes place and the seller must keep the permit.

Beyond the legal requirements surrounding handgun purchase permits, anything else must be agreed to by the purchaser and seller.

Personally, I would not buy or sell a handgun without a signed bill of sale identifying the gun, the buyer, the seller, and the handgun purchase permit number. I would also not do a deal without verifying the other party's identity by seeing their drivers license or some other good form of ID. But that's just my opinion.
 
Weapon transfer in NC

I've purchased and sold guns in NC, and the easiest solution is to have seller
sell gun to dealer, and buyer buy from dealer. Dealer will probably charge about $20 to handle paperwork. Legally, paperwork is required, and dealers
have paperwork forms, and storage and record keeping system.
 
Hmm.....the guy im buying it from has an original reciept or bill of sale from the place he bought it from. Im going to make sure the serial number on the reciept matches the gun. Also, im taking a copy of this reciept (or the original if the owner doesnt need it after the transfer). In addition to this, I am getting my CCW, and giving him a copy of this (depending on what kind of information is on it...ie no Social Security #)

I like your idea of making sure the guy is really who he says he is, and will definately look at his license to make sure. I made up a business document, and the information I have on it is: Make, Model, Caliber, Serial Number of gun, his full name and address, my full name and address, the date its going to be purchases, it will have my signature, and his signature, as well as dates it was signed, and the name and address of the original place he purchased it from, and I mentioned on it that he is getting a copy of my CCW permit, and that I am getting a copy of the original sales document.

Do you think this is good enough? Should I take anymore precautions, or add anymore information to the document?
 
GLP, you can do a little or a lot to document a handgun transfer to satisfy yourself and the seller.

You should read this booklet by the Attorney General about North Carolina firearms laws, particularly the transfer requirements on page 3.
