How do you tell the M1A mags from GI original, USA mags and springfield? They all look alike, but they don't function the same way.

Never seen an SA mag, but I will say that the USGI are parkerized with a matte dark grey finish, the grey varies. All USA that I have seen as well as other cheap knock-offs come in a cheap looking shiny black blued finish, kinda like the blue job you'd find on any POS 100.oo pistol. My
GI ones have no stamps, I don't know about USA since I won't own one.

USGI, SA are both heavy, parkerized and have a welded locking lug....USA are cheap punched tin, rough egdes, mickey mouse floor plates and floor plate tab and the feed lips bend when you look at them.

When you run out of AMMO you could throw the USGI or SA mags and target in down.....USA mags you don't run out of AMMO cause they don't feed all the time.

Honest I really like USA mags...in fact I have 5 of them that came with my SA M1A as a package deal......I will let you have them for $50.00 shipped

Orig mfgr's

Vince, real G I issue mags.........USUALLY are the brand named "BRW"...........this is the most common NOW.
And is the one Springfield used to ship with their rifles.........
ALL, the Chinee's, are UNmarked, and are sometimes wrapped in wax paper, and greased.
Another American mfgr, is marked C I , they are good also..........any others, I would steer clear of.......especially f they are over $30-40..........
The Chinee's work well.........IF, and a big IF, they will fit into the mag well, and lock into place.

PS: the only markings are found "Stamped", into the back of the mag, about an 1-1/2 up from the bottom.............if there are NO markings.....then they are not ISSUE mags.......unless they have been refinished, and sandblasted.

GI mags are marked on the front of the mag, but since the marking is often light and was applied before Parkerizing, it is hard to see.
