How do you improve lockup if ....

It's solid on 5 cylinders and the remaining is pretty loose ?

Is the solution replacing the extractor/rachet ?

On what gun?

The "Fix" depends on the brand and type.

"Usually" the ratchet is NOT the part needing attention, it's actually a combination of the cylinder and the cylinder locking bolt.

In a case where 5 chambers are OK and one isn't, it's probably a matter of that chamber's locking notch being out of spec or damaged/worn.

MOST modern DA revolvers like S&W, Ruger, Dan Wesson, Taurus, and the later design Colt's, are not supposed to lock up tightly.
The design requires that the cylinder be slightly loose in order for the gun to work properly.

The only DA revolvers that lock up TIGHT are the older Colt designs like the Python and Detective Special.

Thanks Dfw ... It's actually a brand new gun I was looking at from S&W ... the 686P (7 rounder)

5 cylinders are solid (barely wiggle the cylinder at all) and 2 you can rotate the cylinder back and forth a solid 1/16th inch. and slightly less on the second. :(

Otherwise the gun is tight ... but especially the one cylinder bothers me a little and I was wondering if this is common and or easily tightened up.

Having ONE chamber that loose and the others tighter is NOT normal.

If you bought it, either return it to where you bought it for an exchange, or send it in to S&W for a warranty repair.

If you haven't bought it.....DON'T.
