How do you free up a 1911 slide?

A friend has a Colt 1911 Series 70 with a frozen slide. What should he do?

Put it somewhere warm?

Is it rusted shut, improperly assembled, or just "new" and very tight? In the first two cases, you'll probably need a gunsmith. In the last case, I think 500 rounds through the bore would loosen it nicely.

Start taking it apart until you find out why. Will the slide stop or the recoil spring plug come out?

Mike, a little more info is needed here. Is it frozen in battery or open? George

It is frozen in battery. I think it is the result of storing in a damp basement for a few months. I sprayed G96 down the barrel and up the magazine hole to try to free it up. Thanks for the help.
