i'm at school in california and purchased my handgun here, and would like to bring it back home to texas and shoot with some friends while i'm there for a couple weeks. can i mail it to my address in texas? is it legal to do that? what steps do i need to take to bring my gun home? (i'm flying back so obviously i can't bring it on the plane)

you can NOT leagally mail the weapon via US mail unless it is from FFL holder to FFL holder. UPS will carry it but only via UPS red or better known as next day air. Be sure and insure it for plenty as we know them as the united pilfers service.

oh i forgot, you can carry your weapon by airline. check with the carrier for specifics but it will involve putting the gun in a gun case inside a hard suitcase. be sure to arrive in plenty of time before the flight so you can declare the weapon, allow them to inspect it to see if it is unloaded, and seal your suitcase. when you arrive at the airport go directly to the baggage check in, do not attempt to enter the gate areas with your weapon or carry it with your onboard luggage. also ammo can not be carried with the firearm, even in seperate compartments. good luck

It usually isn't a big deal to fly with a pistol. Just remember don't try to carry it on the plane. When you check it be sure to have a case that locks. You will usually be required to sign a statement that you are the only person with the key(combination) to the locking case.

Having a non-gun person try to check that your pistol is indeed unloaded is sometime humorous but be helpful, you'll find most are usually fairly professional about it. Often they'll keep the gun behind the counter as to not spook the sheeple. If the gun is taken down be sure to show them where the chamber is.

I purchased a package of hot pick zip ties. Before I even leave for the airport I clear the weapon, lock the action open and insert the tie through the barrel and around the slide. This allows the ticket clerk to inspect without touching.
