How do I tell if my Barrels are Silver or Soft Soldered?

I would like to get my side by side shotgun reblued but I need to find out if the barrels are silver soldered or soft soldered. Is there a way to tell?

Apparently the soft soldering will come apart under the blueing process so I don't want to get it done if they are soft soldered.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I have never seen silver soldered barrels on a side by side. You have to assume that they are soft soldered and choose a refinisher who can do rust bluing. The barrels are safe in that process.

Can the rust blueing be done over a bead blast finish? Giving me a matte appearance or would it have to be done glossy?

As for the other poster who asked why it matters, the soft solder is either susceptible to heat or the chemicals in blueing (I'm not sure which but I suspect it's the heat) and will come apart under normal blueing proceedures.

Too bad, I really want these babies non-glare. Oh well, they'll look good this way too.

Rust bluing can be done to give you a satin finish. Look in a copy of Gun List or Shotgun News under "gunsmiths," and you will find several folks who advertise rust bluing services.
