How do I repair scope gouge?

I have a Redfield 2-7 Illuminator that I sent in to Scope Service in Tulsa to be reconditioned. It already had a gouge and I'd like to repair it if I could. It's deep enough that regular scope touch up paint wouldn't fill it in. I was thinking of trying to squeegee a thin film of JB Weld into the gouge first, smooth to out before it dries, and then touch it up with some paint. Any other thoughts? Thanks.

Avoid the sanding...
Release agent on the are surrounding the gouge.
Very slightly overfill the gouged area with JB Weld. Place a thin plastic film (cigarette pack cellophane) over the epoxy to get it perfectly flat with the surrounding metal.
When cured, peel off the plastic film, then the epoxy residue from the release agent.

The excess should be just a thin film if you didn't overfill the repair.
