How do I remove the grips from my Kimber ?

Uh, sorry if this is a stupid question, but my allen wrench doesn't seem to work on these screws. I have a Kimber Custom Classic with rubber grips. They look as if they are stripped, but this isn't so because the grips have never been removed and the bluing still shows. Is there a tool out there I should be using ?

Oh yea..Who sells the cheapest slim wooden grips ?

MM, they should come out with the use of an allen wrench. Don't be alarmed if the bushing comes out with the screw, this is fairly common in 1911s. I have replaced all of the grips on my, Kimbers, Springfield and Charles Daly. several bushings have come out with the screw.

If the bushing does come out with the screw, clean the bushings with the screws still in them, and the inside and outside of the screw/bushing holes. I use Gun Scrubber. This is to remove all oil from these parts. Then place a tiny amount of Loctite in the bushing holes in the frame, and insert the screws with the bushings attached back in the hole. I normally let them sit overnight before try to unscrew them. This time when you try to remove the screws, the bushings will stay in the frame like they oughtta!

The best deals I have seen on grips of any kind are at gun shows...negotiate!

I hope this helps!

Thanks for responding Big George. It appears the screws are rounded and don't have a perfect hex head. On top of that, none of my Allen wrebches will fit. Thats why I wondered if Kimber made some special kinda wrench for them. This is REALLY frustrating !!!

Thanks 224 !!! I didn't know whether my allen wrench was metric or standard, I hardly ever use it. Now I don't have to take the frame to the hardware store... ;)

Funny, I found a 3/32 works fine (don't have a 7/64). The top part of the screw does appear to be rounded, but insert the key deeply, it will hold just fine. A dap of Locktight blue isn't a bad idea to keep them from loosening up when you re-assemble. FWIW, Hogue uses the same size allen wrench on the screws that came with the wood grips I put on my SIG 226. Good shooting to ya, M2
