how do i make an auto shotgun cycle target loads?

I have a Remington sportsman 58 auto shotgun that will not eject target loads. It will eject high bass 2 3/4 inch however. This gun takes up to three inch loads, but has a recall, and should not have 3 inchers shot through it. most of my shooting is for clay pigeons, and i can't afford to run high bass shells through it.

so the question is would it be a terrible idea to bore out the holes that allow gas to eject the shell? the gun is perfectly clean and lubed, but still won't eject low bass. any ideas on issues that could be caused by boring it out? any other ideas on how to fix this issue?

thanks in advance

These days the height of the brass has little to do with the strength of the hull, it's more tradition than anything. Have you considered using a heavy (3-1/4 DE) target load? Yes, enlarging the gas port(s) will let you shoot lighter loads; but, it's a job best left to a pro. Once you change there's no going back. If you don't know what you're doing, you can ruin a barrel.

the loads i have tried were 3 DE. I could possibly buy higher power shells, but then i run into the same price constraints. I'd like to get by with the cheap shells if possible. thanks for the input. I'll probably try something a little heavier and if it doesn't work try boring out the ports

From one of my earlier posts, here's Remington's sizes for 1100 gas port(s). It may give you an idea of the relative differences. I don't have a clue about M-58 sizes.
Remington 1100 12-Gauge Gas Vents
Size (inches) / Drill - - - - Length / Model
.073 / #49 x 1 hole - - - - 34" Duck/Goose
.064 / #52 x 1 hole - - - - 30" Magnum
.079 / #47 x 2 holes- - - - 34" Full Trap
.079 / #47 x 2 holes- - - - 30", 28", 26", 22" Field
.086 / #44 x 2 holes- - - - 26" Skeet
.086 / #44 x 2 holes- - - - 26" Compensated

Edit: Salmoneye beat me to the post

ok i would guess mine would be at .079 right now. sounds like i should try taking them up to .086. what do you mean the gas system is adjustable? are you referring to the part you turn on the magazine cap? I have that set on low which allows for the most power to go to ejecting the shell? is there some other way i'm overlooking?

The info Zippy posted is for an 1100, as he said. Salmoneye gave you a link for the 58. If your barrel hole is only .079" something is seriously wrong, since the info proviced by Salmoneye seems to me to indicate that it should be at least .1285" and possibly larger depending on barrel length and if it is compensated. Are you sure the hole is clean?

I haven't measured the ports, I'm sure the numbers on the link Salmoneye provided are right. The holes are clean. Salmoneye, I did read it and I'm still not understanding how it is adjustable other than the high and low on the magazine cap. Am i overlooking something?

I was not sure that you had looked at the adjustable mag cap...

If this is not the 'cure', then you need to look at the ports, binding bolt, lubrication, etc....

Sorry I can not help more from here...
