How do I locate a good lawyer just in case.

I carry routinly. What is the best procedure for locating a PRO-gun lawyer who really could defend me in the (unlikely- I hope and pray) event that I am involved in a shooting. It does me little good to save my life only to spend it in prison. I live in northern Indiana.

Do I call all the lawyers in town?
Does any pro-gun group maitain a list of lawyers?
Should I call HCI and ask what lawyer they hate the most?

How does one judge the skill of a lawyer? Are any of us lawyers?

Let hope you dont need to, but we all know how things are going lately.

I know where I live, if someone breaks into your home and threatens to kill you.... you shoot them with a hollowpoint = you goto jail. That is considered excessive force... If you use a full jacket bullet you are less likely to be arrested.. Now tell me that is not insane! I know if someone breaks into my home when I am there, it means they are willing to injure or kill me, to get what they want. Otherwise they would go find an empty home to rob. ugh.

Ask a LEO, "Who would you have defend you if you got into serious trouble?" LEOs know who the good defense attorneys are in town.

Or, if you have a state rifle and pistol association, ask the headquarters office for a list of attorneys they think will serve you well.

I then recommend you take the time to meet with your "future" attorney and see if you can work together.

If you know any judges ask them whom they consider are the best criminal trial lawyers in your area. Judges are the best source. They know which ones are prepared and which ones are not. They know the ones full of bs and those that aren't.

Do not rest on the advice of non-lawyer friends. Many lawyers the general public like the best are not the best criminal defense attorneys and some of the lawyers they do not like are often times the best. Do not rest only on the advice of one attorney as to who is the best. Ask them who they would want to represent them if they were charged with a crime.

I agree--find out who the LEOs think is the best. I carry the card of an atty who helps out in the NRA personal protection classes here who is also the ex-DA and well wired politically.

Years ago, when it looked like my agency was going to turn on me I contacted an attorney with some solid experience: he was retained by a convicted doper who was doing time for the murder of a police officer on a drug raid. By the time he got done he established that the narcotics section had been falsifying warrants for years and that the raid was a bad one from the get-go. Caused a complete reshuffle of the PD before he was done and his client was released from prison. If you're going to get a lawyer, get one who scares your persecutors.
