How do I explain the AWB to Antis?

I have an understanding of it, I just don't know how to explain it to people who don't know. How have you guys done it? How should I do it and manage to convince them but not lie or preach?

Lying and preaching are not my strong suits, nor are they moral, correct debate tactics.

So any advice?

There is certainly NO reason for 2nd Amendment supporters to lie or preach. The facts speak for themselves. Unlike the anti's, we don't dance in the blood of shooting victims to score political points, nor do we create total falsehoods to further our agenda.

A perfect example of the anti-gun mindset is Michael Bellesiles, who after writing Arming America, had his Bancroft Prize rescinded after it was discovered to be a pure work of fiction.

Relate the known to the unknown.

Cars are a good example of how I not only test the waters, but get my point across without being too preachy.

As in:

“Hey, you can’t buy that car, it’s got a V8, it might go too fast and hurt someone!”

Or, “No you can’t have that one in red, insurance companies say red cars are the most likely to be broken into, so forget about it.”

Or, “You don’t need a Sports Car to go too work, they should be outlawed!”

Or, “SUV’s are loud, dirty, and wasteful, there should be a waiting period to make sure you really need one before buying it.”

These sorts of things relate better to people because they deal with stuff they already have. Firearms are a polarizing issue, people are generally either for them or against them. Threaten to take away that prize Corvette however, and you’ve got a fight on your hands.

It took me a few months to do it, but I personally took 7 new shooters to the last Pennsylvania THR gathering and several of them were John Kerry Liberals.

What I did:

Loaded up my Beretta 92FS with a 10rd mag and let them fire it.

Loaded up my Beretta 92FS with a 15rd mag and let them fire it.

I asked them wich magazine would reduce crime. They laughed at me and said, "Is that really the kind of stuff they banned?"

I then proceeded to show them my Russian SKS and the bayonet.

They laughed.

I showed them what a muzzle brake does and how some of them were banned.

They laughed.

I personaly hope the woman that came consider voting for Libertarian candidates instead of John Kerry. I'm not positive but I think they may change their voting habits.

Hands on training is the best tool for teaching.

Get them to a range.

Girls have the habit of being against guns until one of their friends learns how to shoot. They they all want to try.

Jamie Young that is excellent! That is exactly the kind of thing we should all be doing to drive a stake through the heart of that horrid law, and make sure it stays dead.

BRAVO!

If they need to have it explained to them then they can't reasonably justify supporting it now can they? Maybe you should just point that out to them. It has worked for me several times.
