how do I adjust the trigger on m44, 7.62x54

Before I tinker with it, does the screw that's attached to the metal band that's attached to the trigger on the underside of the action adjust trigger pull?
The travel on my m44 is terrible and it doesn't fire until the trigger is almost touching the back of the finger guard.
