How did I do?

Well finally found a .357 ... nice M19-6, short barrel (2, 3 inches?) absolutely MINT. Thing looks completely unfired. Not even a hint of wear around the cylinder, locks up tight as a vault, nice bluing with an exposed hammer. Serial BBT9XXX, anyone know how old?

Anyways, paid $350, probably not a GREAT price but I'm satesfied with it cause I've been looking for one for quite a while. I finally have a nightstand gun bot myself and my girlfriend will enjoy shooting :D :D :D

Then nothing else needs to be said regarding "how you did?" now does it:D

Seriously, somebodies gonna chime in and mention they got theirs for $120 with box/papers and a kiss from Cindy Crawford. Doesn't matter. Your price was far from highway robbery anywhere and would be considered a better than decent deal in my area.

Be happy :)

Blueduck

PS, they made some 3" guns but it's most likely a 2 1/2" model.

Thanks for the reply Blue...good to kow I didn't get robbed. I have no idea how much they go for, but I heard stories of police turn in's for 1-200 and would have been bummed a bit if that was still the going rate.

They had a 4" as well for $325, looked like it was fired very little as well, but had rust on the backstrap and on the extraction rod...

Around here the $100-200 police turn ins no longer exist and from the banter here on TFL I think that is true just about everywhere.

Here even .38s in good shape go for $250-300 usually (well, $300 would be like new) and $200-250 for those that are decent but not great (with some exceptions). In K-frame .357s $250-300 seems typical for guns in average condition. For one like the one you describe $350 or even more would seem about right.

At any rate, you are more familiar with what they go for around you. If you aren't, it is probably because they are disappearing which means that you get what you can get and if you don't mind paying the money you did well. Since you really wanted the gun and don't mind the amount you spent you did well. Sounds like a really nice gun.

Have seen some nice deals on police trade in's but not $200 for a model 19 in many many moons and I doubt any even then were in the condition you described.

Used to drive myself nuts looking at surplus ads and finally purchased a few from them. One thing to think about on these is that many companies charge you $20 for shipping, won't "sell" to you only your FFL so there is still sales tax + your dealer may charge $25 or more for his transfer service. That great $249.99 price can turn into $325 or more real quick. Add that to the fact you don't get to see or examine what your buying...

Not saying you can't get good deals like this, I have. But rarely as good a deal as it seems at first.

Great gun, nice catch, enjoy! :D

Ya done great. What you paid is right in line with what Model 19s go for. For one that is perfect, I would say you did better than OK. You have yourself a great gun. Take care of it, and it will take care of you.

Hey Max-

Looks like your Smith & Wesson model 19-6 was made
between Oct. of 1988 and Feb. of 1989. The BBT
set of letters started at BBT2293. Hope this helps?

I actually paid $150 for mine, but no box, no papers, did not want to kiss the guy behind the counter (I am sure he felt the same way), the finish was rough, rusty back strap, but it had Herret's stocks and the internals were pristine. Granted, I bought mine about 5 years ago and things were different then. I think $350 for a mint condition Model 19 is a good deal.

Prices on decent Smith's are going up all over the place. In essence you bought a new pre-ban S&W for about $200.00 less than what a new model would cost. You stole the gun from that perspective.

Thanks Ala Dan...I'm surprised they were still making them with the exposed hammers back then.

Now I just have to make it through the dang 10 day wait... :barf:

Sounds like it might be a round butt 2½".....like the one in my pocket as I type. Great carry gun, enough weight to be a pleasure to shoot and they do shoot well.

Goodonya.

Sam

It is definitely the round butt K frame 2 1/2...called to check.

It has the wood grips which are a bit smallish...I'd like a nice set of rubber grips a little fatter, but I dislike the ones with finger grooves in the front. Anyone know who makes a monogrip style for the round butt K without finger grooves?

Max-

Check out Pachmayr rubber grips. They are a two-piece
set of grip's; instead of the one piece, as made by Hogue.

Sounds like a fair deal to me. I nearly bought another M19 2.5" last weekend for the same price you did, but bought a 625 instead (Angela Jolie did french me...or was that
Andy Jolie). You might want to try a Tyler t-grip add on before changing grips. They add a little more front to back girth to the grip and run about $28 delivered.

Gotta Luv Um!

I think you did good, not great, but good.

Here is a pic of my Pinned & Recessed Mod 19 and Mod 66. I gave $300 for the 19 and got lucky with the 66 at $250. I've seen that $350 is a common price for these guns.
