How come?

How come we can have 22LR lead ammo that pumps 1000-1200 fps and not only doesn't lead up the bore but also actually greases it so it doesn't have to be cleaned rigorously but try that with a larger bullet and you get a mess?

Not sure what you mean. Rimfire ammunition has got to be the dirtiest, nastiest ammunition you could ever fire through a weapon.

Aw c'mon, that's just powder flakes. But the reeeeeeal mess is when bullets lead the bore. Can take out that powder dust wit a rag.
Put a 9mm or .357 lead slug down the barrel and u gots a real mess.

And I was talkin about REAL .22 ammo. Not the cheap loss leader junk at ChinaMart.

Maybe 'cause the pressures and temps are lower with the .22 and therefore lead isn't vaporized from the base of the bullet?
Just a theory, don't really know. -Kframe

I do not know if this is applicable.....

I read a couple of books about the single shot black powder guns. From What I remember the reason they did not lead was because of the bullet lubrication would prevent the melted lead from sticking to the bore.

They also went to great extremes with the lubricant and bullet composition.
