How can you tell what your Windage is?

I understand how you can figure what a 10mph wind is going to do to a 150gr bullet at 100yds but how can you tell the difference between a 10MPH wind and a 25MPH wind? How can you test wind speed I guess is the question?
Fly a kite?

Well, SodaPop my old friend, it all depends on what kind of beans you've been eating. :)

Seriously, I think the best teacher is experince. My last qualification in the ARmy (lo, these many years ago) I shot Expert (M-16) with a gusty wind blowing across the range. I hit all my 300 meter targets.

Ifn' you want to get technical, you can buy an anemometer, trot down to the range and do some test firing and log your results. THe 1000 yard shooters do that.

The Furthest I've ever shot was out to 500yds and I never really noticed a drastic shift in any direction. I eventually would like to get out to 800yd and maybe 1000yds. And from reading Ballistic info it can make the difference between a hit and a miss when you get out that far.

I'm way too lazy to go look it up, but you can tell by the amount of movement of leaves and grass, for light breezes. As the wind speed increases, larger limbs begin to sway, etc. If a log chain is blown horizontal, you probably oughta wait to shoot or maybe not live in Lubbock.

It's probably in a Boy Sprout handbook, and maybe in the ballistics section of something like the Sierra reloading manual...

Good call Art

You hit it when you said you can gauge the wind speed by how much "stuff" is moving. I do recall seeing this information in my Dad's old scout manual. Unfortunately I don't have ready access to it. However, I will make a call or two and see what I can't dig up....useable info to follow (hopefully).

"or maybe not live in Lubbock"
Why would you live in Lubbock next to that little po-dunk school anyway?

Gig-em Aggs!

If you're shooting at paper, spend ten bucks for one of those little plastic wind guages. If you're shooting at live animals in enough wind to wonder about it, you're too far away - get closer.
