How can you tell if you have a Marlin or Remlin?

I have an xl7 .270 and a 981T .22 which are both great rifles for the money. I am just curious when that transition occurred? Can you tell by serial number or year on these? Thanks.

Two things to look for on the left side of the barrel. Was it made in CT or NY? There might also be a small "JM"stamp on the left side of the barrel near the receiver.

NY gun was made by Remington.

If it was made in CT and it has the JM stamp it was made by Marlin.

Both my XL7 and Guide Gun were made by Marlin.

The change occurred around 2009 (I think).

I think the X7 and XT-22 are made in Mayfield, KY and not Ilion, NY. The New Haven, CT guns have a JM proof stamp and the new Remlins have a REP proof stamp.

The JM stamp is not a definitive indicator.
Remington continued to use barrels made at the Marlin plant with that stamp on them after the move to the Remington plant till those were used up.

My XL7 says North Haven, CT, so I guess if it says anything different it was made by Remington.

As far as JM stamps, I guess it's possible that there was some overlap.

More than possible, I was told that by two different Remington reps at the SHOT Show in Vegas this year in going over a rack of display Marlins & figuring out where each was made.

Current production may have gone to Mayfield, alone; but production was shared in the past. Both Ilion and Mayfield were producing X7s.

Yep. It goes both ways.
Marlin was using some "REP" barrels, before they shut down in CT.
And, Remington was still using some "JM" barrels in Ilion.

There's no easy way to figure out what you've got.

The only thing that really matters.... Do they shoot?

(Edited a ridiculous typo.)

OK, my xl7 was made in Mayfield, KY and has the Rep stamp.

My 981T was made in New Haven, Ct and has no stamp that I can see.

Yes both are fine shooters and the accuracy of both are very good.

For my guns it may narrow it down to know the year of the take over?
