How Can I Smooth Up a Winchester Model 94 Action?

Hard Ball

I have a Winchester Model 94 which is an excellent rifle since I put decent sights on it accept for one thing. Its action is very stiff. How can I smooth up the action?

The Winchester action will never be as smooth as a Marlin oh Hard One. This is the trade off for having machined forgings of the Winchester versus trepanned cold-rolled tubing and stamped metal parts on other brands. That said, the tolerances will be initially tighter to ensure a long lasting weapon with a long lasting fit.

I use RIG grease on the bearing surfaces which is wiped off to a degree before hunting to keep the crud down when firing ammo. I have noted RIG smooths it up a good bit.

Art Eatman is the man and can impart much more wisdom than can I.

As a Marlin owner, I can tell you I love the new Winchester product put out by the new owners: Fabrique National of Belgium. Remember: Winchester is a trade name owned by Olin.

Thanks Will.
I have never owned a Marlin centerfire rifle. I just notice that this 94 is not nearly as smooth a .30-30 Model 94 made around 1955 that I sometimes shoot.

I gotta believe some of that is the fact that Winchester states newer guns will be tighter. That 1955 model is in a class by itself and they are going for $800.00 in Dallas as you read this.

Yes it can smoothed up nicly, having seen alot of cowboy action shooters, it is a common practice in my shop.

It does how ever require total disassembly of the rifle and hand honeing each contact area. not quick job !
