How can I get Hipower mags to drop free.......

I'm struggling with the same issue.

I'm told that removing the magazine safety will help greatly. And I understand that Browning makes magazines that have springs on the base, which push against the frame, so that when the mag release is pushed, they drop down. I've only heard about these, not seen them.

Hello. The ten round magazines sold with new HPs
have the mousetrap attachment that ejects them from the magazine well of the gun.

Occassionally, I've seen a HP or two in which the rear of the magazine rubbed against the sear's leaf spring which runs the length of the magazine well. The above-mentioned magazines should "defeat" that problem and/or the magazine disconnect for those wishing to leave them in place.

Best.

I replaced the springs in three of mine with Wolff +10%; now they drop free even with the cursed mag disconnect still in the gun.

I had my mag disconnect removed.

I know you may not like that option. However, it cleared up the mag drop issue and it improved the trigger greatly.

I want to weapon to go off if I pull the trigger, never liked that safety device.

My 2 cents.

Putting a mirror polish on the front, top portion of the mag and the face of the disconnect plunger will also help... It has for me.

ohen cepel, the mag disconnect isn't a safety device, it's just something put there to make the trigger gritty. :)

I have a FEG HP clone that I removed the magazine disconnect, and the magazines shoot out like missles. I also have an Inglis WWII HP with the mag disconnect, and the magazines don't drop free. I polished the mag disconnect, they still don't.

It will be difficult to get a drop-free magazine with the magazine disconnect left in.

When the slide is locked back, it pushes on the magazine from the back as the magazine disconnect spring pushes on the magazine from the front. This tends to trap the magazine - and the problem can be made worse by the magazine rubbing against the interior of the grips or the leaf spring.

If you polish your magazines and the front of the mag disconnect, certain pre-ban magazines will drop free (providing you incorporate a little "shake" into your mag change movement to get them started). The only way to determine which mags will drop is to test each of them individually; but usually the smoother, polished finishes work best.

If you can live without preban mags, the 10rd mags with the mousetrap spring are definitely drop-free. I can incline my mag well sideways and upwards at about a 10-15 degree angle and still eject empty mags just by pushing the mag release button.

Hello Stephen, they only drop free when the slide is in battery. That's the only time the follower pushes away from the slide with enought force to overcome the friction of the disconnect plunger against the magazine tube.

Now that I think of it, that does not make the magazines "drop-free" as long as that disgusting "magazine safety" is still festering in my otherwise beautiful Belgian works of art.

ONE of these days...

I have a nice commercial Hi Power that I bought from a friend...he had the mag disconnect removed and not only do the mags drop free, it has an excellent trigger. It isn't my normal defense gun or carry gun so I am not particularly worried about liability issues.

'Course you could always drop full mags. The extra weight helps 'em slip right out. ;)

Dump the mag disconnect. Takes about 15 minutes, if that, & about a 2 (on a 1-10 scale) of difficulty.

Far as liability goes, if you're justified in shooting someone, you're justified with whatever. If not, you're screwed anyway.

I'd just as soon have a pistol that goes bang when the (much better) trigger is pulled.

I just picked up a Hi Power this weekend (see my other recent post about Berettas and you'll hear the full story) and I got three standard capacity Pachmayr mags NIB with the rubber/plastic pad on the bottom. These not only fit well, but can be ejected since the magazine "trigger stiffener" action is still in the gun. True, they don't spring out like the recoil spring on a 92FS but they will fall free empty.

Check Six.
