How can I get a spurless hammer for a Ruger SP-101?

I have thought from time to time about bobbing or dehorning the hammer on one or more of my Ruger SP-101s. If I could get a drop-in spurless hammer as a replacement, that would be ideal, and I could end up like one of the factory models.

I remember reading years ago that Ruger had a policy about not selling spurless hammers to either the civilian market or to anyone who is not a gunsmith. I can find no mention of this policy on the Ruger website. Although they do list a spurless hammer assembly, you have to send the revolver to the factory for the hammer to be fitted.

I did an archive search here, along with a Google and looked at Numrich gun parts and Gunbroker using the terms 'Ruger SP-101 spurless hammer' without very much luck. I would prefer not to have to saw, Dremel or grind the spur off one of my existing hammers. The factory spurless hammer would be ideal.

Does anyone have any sources to suggest? Thanks for all help.

Ruger sells the SP-101 as DAO without the hammer. I would try just ordering one and see what happens. I changed a security six to double action only and I decided that unless I paid to have a really good trigger job which would have cost more the the gun was worth , DAO wasn't worth it on a revolver. I put the original hammer back in it evrything was right with the world again

You'll have to send it in to Ruger if you want a new DAO hammer.

Some Ruger parts, (like the hammer) are factory-restricted parts for safety reasons.

Ruger holds these restricted parts pretty close, and even the usual sources like Brownell's, Jack First, and Gun Parts can't get them.

Try contacting Hamilton Bowen. He works on a lot of Rugers and may have some take-offs and such.

Best bet, if you can't get a smooth one, get a replacement one and tinker on it.

One question... why? I have thought about smoothign mine a bit (it makes my thumb pretty raw after a day of shooting it) but not completely smooth before.

Be advised if you send it back to Ruger they will assure your trigger is up to the new (heavy/gritty) standards. No way around it. Just a guess here but they might automaticly convert it to DAO when the put the hammer in as well. ( Again for liability reasons.) One of the advantages of a custom bobbed hammer is that you can still keep the SA function of your revolver for those times that you want it. If not comfortable doing it yourself, I'd suggest you find a competant smith and have him bob your hammer and do a action job. It'll likely cost you less in the long run anyway.
