longjohn-I'm sure individual guns will vary, but I had a 4516 several years ago that would keep most shots in the black at 50 feet.If you are going to carry it, you will certainly want to test it with the ammunition you plan to use, but I'd be very surprised if don't find it more than satisfactory for defense.-Wally
