A friend's Situation.

Ok, here are the facts. You can purchase 3K of handguns. He carries a HK USP 45 when he desires to carry. He desires ONE new weapon solely for target pactice. The cost of the weapons must include at least 6-Mags, as he keeps 3 full all the time and rotates them every month to save on the springs.

He loves the looks of the Sig P-220 Sport and he loves one of those highly modified 2-3K 1911s, which should he purchase?

I suggested the Sig P-220 Sport, or a 9mm Sport, or even 40 cal Sport and then purchase ONE or TWO more weapons to finish spending his 3K he has for a semi-autos. He is leaning this way but still likes the 1911s--and the one he is looking at is VERY nice--of course for nearly 3k it should be!

What do you think?

Brands he likes H&K, Sig, 1911s.

He owns 3 USP45s, 1-Sig P-230, and numerous rifles.

Formally owned Sig P-220, P226, Colt 1911, & Colt Officiers.

For a reliable, accurate, out of the box .45, for less than $1,000, the SIG 220 can't be beat. The Sport should be the same.

But if you want to spend a bit more, any number of 1911s are available. They'll prove to be more accurate, just as reliable, and as easy to carry concealed -- something you could never do with a 220 Sport. Over the longer ranges -- 20 to 50 yards, the custom 1911s will probably be more accurate.

I had a very nice P-220, with a marvelous single-action trigger. The double-action was OK, but it was always hard not to pull the first shot. (A friend has a nickel 220 that has the best trigger I've ever felt on a DA SIG; its not a problem with his.)

Having owned and shot a 220, and having shot a friend's 220 sport, I don't see what you're getting for the extra money. The 220 sport isn't, as best I can tell, all that much more accurate than the standard 220, but it is more pleasant to shoot. But it is bigger and more awkward, and slightly more trouble to take down and clean.

I'd find a local (or, at least in the same state) gunsmith with a good reputation for 1911s, and have him build me one... You'll spend considerably less than $3000 and you'll likely outshoot any 220 could find, Sport or otherwise. If that doesn't suit him, go for the top of the line Kimber, or one of the medium price Wilsons.
