How about a 338 short magnum

the 300 WM is now available in short magnum, why not make a ballitic twin for the 338 Lapua for shorter action? Maybe something like a shortened 505 Gibbs case necked down for the 338?

With cartridges that fat, you wouldn't fit many in a conventional magazine, so a rifle would have to use something like a Steyr rotary mag and hold 5 rounds.

Aside from the recoil being LARGE, the case is huge as well.
The .505 Gibbs has a big butt, and no one is making standard actions with bolt faces that will accomodate it. Even if it was rebated to .416 Rigby/.338 Lapua size, there would still be no takers except CZ and Dakota.
A rotary magazine to fit those would look like a beer can...

Take a look at the cartridge that H&K designed for their semi auto SGW2000 sniper weapon that did not make it past prototyping.
It was a shortened .50 M2 case, necked down to 9mm.
Schwiiiing!

But isn't the .505 Gibbs case significantly smaller than the 50 BMG case?

The .338 Laupa has a case quite similair to the .416, so I figure you can't make a short action using the .416 case and expect matching ballistics.

You wouldn't consider looking at the Lazzeroni Galaxy cartridge?
