Hot Brass to the Face!!

Hey guys I need some input from someone more familiar with this platform than I am. I have a Taurus PT92C that I got a couple years ago used. Overall I have been very pleased with it, I have put probably 500ish round through it since I've had it. Its accurate, easy to handle, easy for my wife to shoot and alot cheaper than my 45's to shoot and reload for.
Lately however I have noticed that it has developed the tendency to eject hot brass straight out the top into my face. It not a terribly serious problem but just irritating to get hot brass landing on my hat or hitting me in the face. To me it seems that it would be an extractor problem. It seems to be worse with 115 cheap ball ammo vs 124/147gr defensive/carry ammo. Unfortunately I am not very familiar with tinkering on this platform but has anyone else seen this or had this problem? Is there a simple fix that doesnt involve a gunsmith charging me $100/hr?

Weak extractor spring can do that. I had a Tangfolio 9mm did that and a new extractor spring fixed it. I would clean the extractor hook first.

Definitely call Taurus. However with their lifetime warranty, they will likely expect you to pay shipping to return it.

Might be easier to grin and bear it if that is the case.

Best of luck.

It might be time for all new springs. You don't have that many rounds through it, but who knows how many the previous owner sent down the bore. New springs are cheaper than shipping it back to Taurus. If it was me, I'd try that first.

Reason that it could be the recoil spring is that they get beat up. After so much pounding they get flattened out and allow the slide to go back further and cause the extractor to pull back more throwing the casings closer to you.

For you. Wear a ball cap.

And make sure your wife doesn't wear anything low cut to the range. I've seen the "hot brass boogaloo" more than once.

She'll thank you.

I was recently researching brass ejection and how to (try to) influence the direction. One thing I found was this pic and some info saying that a lower brass-to-ejector contact point causes a more vertical ejection path (case ejects upwards, and maybe into your face), and that a higher brass-to-ejector contact point cause a more sideways exit (to the right with most guns).

Other stuff can also contribute to the brass ejection direction.

Most of the time when I find people that have guns ejecting brass into their faces, the gun is torquing in their hands during recoil and they don't realize it.

Let somebody else, who is an experienced shooter, shoot the gun. If it still does it, then it is likely a mechanical issue. If not, it is the shooter.

IF it wasn't causing a problem early on -- and that doens't seem to be the case -- changing springs is a possible and inexpensive solution.

If that doesn't fix it, and if the gun isn't being affected by the shooter -- also unlikely, since it's a NEW issue for a gun that ran well earlier -- a local gunsmith may be able to tweak the tip of the ejector so that the base of the round, when it hits it, goes off in a slightly different direction.

- Clean and inspect extractor for good spring tension and check the hook for chips or deformities

- Check the ejector to see if it is loose, chipped or deformed (bent)

- Is the recoil spring longer than the barrel? Since you bought the pistol used, it may be a good idea to change that out.

- Try different (non-bargain) ammo and see if that helps. What brand of cheap 115gr ball are you using?
