Oh say, if the barrel gets so hot to need a heat shield, would that mean it would melt the plastic flashlight holder from ATI ? or any other brand plastic bracket holder or magazine support brackets ?
Who says a shotgun ever gets hot enough to actually need a heat shield?
Other than in a true military application you should never shoot so much ammo in such a short period of time and then have to grab the gun by the barrel to ever need a heat shield.
I've had mine heat up pretty good in an active dove field, but even then it wasn't so bad that I'd want extra weight added to the gun. I agree they are fairly useless for the civilian market unless you appreciate form over function.
My buddies A5 I swear you could light a ciggarette off that barrel after a half hour of rapid fire. I agree that they are primarily for looks but Jeff, those shields weigh NOTHING! I know, I had one and it weighed less than an empty shell. So the weight argument against it is invalid. I say leave the cheapies off. I took off all my crap after awhile.....
I would think you'd have to be doing some serious rapid fire work for it to melt the clamp. ATI's stuff doesn't have the greatest rep for quality. I have one of their stocks with pistolgrip that seems OK. It ain't a knoxx specops but it's well worth the 35 bucks I paid for it. I've never read anything about any melting exactly. My guess is to get the barrel hot enough to melt you're gonna have to punish your shoulder pretty hard. Like I said though this is only a guess.
I'm not sure we'll ever see a round cook off in the chambers.
What would happen is that you'd cycle the action and only eject the brass leaving plastic in the chamber. The next round would probably not chamber, but if it did the prior shells plastic would be bunched up in the barrel and the next round would cause what I like to call "a hint" of trouble.
In the 70's I had trouble with cheap shells ejecting just the brass from my Ithaca Model 37. The brand Alcan, marketed by Smith and Wesson was the usual culprit.
The first thing one should ask is whay there is anything plastic on a defensive shotgun in the first place? The second thing, which is mostly covered by the first, is why are you wasting money on ATI stuff?
I think the ATI plastic says "glass nylon" or something, it may be very very good plastic... I dunno, but I am ignorant, where can I find clamps of good quality that dont cost a mint ? or pistol grip stocks and stuff for a good price that has the quality you wont feel bad about ?
