Hornady steel match question

Hornady advertises their new steel match to be for match purposes. My question is since it's loaded with HP could it be for self defense too? I don't see why they use hp bullets since it's suppose to be for competition type shooting. Just looking for a more affordable but reliable HP ammo to stock up on.

Which bullets are HP? Are all of them? If it's the pistol bullets, I would doubt it's an XTP. IF I had to venture a guess, I'd say it's to make them come apart more easily when they hit pepper poppers and the like. Hornady's site is down right now. You could try some expansion tests to see. That being said, I'd stick with a Federal HST (fairly inexpensive from ammo2go.com) or another reputable hollowpoint. From the pics it looks like the pistol ammo is HP too.

It's the pistol and rifle rounds. The pistol rounds are loading with HAP bullets and says it doesn't have any expansion aiding features. I guess they wouldn't do too well then. I would like to see testing on them anyway just to see.

Sportsman's usually has decent prices for ammuntion.

Somehow $24-25 for 50 rounds of .40 S&W doesn't look like much of a bargain.

I'm thinking that the steel case is supposed to make it cheaper, all it does is make the cases non reloadable and worthless to those that do. All for the priviledge of paying more for ammo that won't be that much better than WWB from Wally World for target practice...

Looks like a waste of time and money.
