Hornady Powder Throw Shortcut

Lately I have been weening myself off the RCBS Chargemaster and needed a way to quickly set my Hornady LnL Measure to different throw weights. I was about to order the micrometer assembly but thought of this and saved myself 30 bucks and thought I would share it. Just take your calipers and measure from the top of the adjusting screw to the locknut using the depth blade and write it down. It can be done with the assembly on or off the throw. At .750 it will throw between 40 to 41 grains of Varget which is close enough to require only fine tuning for one of my loads. I would imagine that this could be applied to other throws that use a screw adjusted metering setup. I keep "pet" loads on a piece of tape on the throw. That way I can switch from 24 grains of TAC to 43 grains of 4350 with minimal adjustments

When you say 40 to 41 grains is that the most accurate it will do? I have not used Varget but it sounds like a pretty broad range if you are going to load without weighing. I'm getting about .5 range with sticks and .2 with spheres in my old RCBS uniflow. Tell me what I'm missing as I have never used anything else.

Neat idea for a shortcut! And Yosemite Steve... I think perhaps you aren't quite following what he's saying. He's not suggesting the Hornady measure won't drop a consistent charge of Varget, he's saying that his shortcut quickly gets him to within a grain and only needs a fine-tuning.

yep Sevens that is exactly right. This eliminates a lot of the open half a turn throw then weigh then open another half turn BS. This gets you into the ballpark then you can fine tune to the .1 grain. Any powder throw with a rotating drum be it a Lee or a Harrell is only accurate .1. If your load is weight tolerant that is good enough if it isn't the you can trickle to the kernal of powder with a beam that has been modded a bit.

@ Yosemete you can get within .1 to .2 with stick on the Uniflow. Fill it all the way up and use a powder baffle or two.

Ok. I get it now. Good idea. I like that my uniflow has numbers. I can get there pretty fast. I DO want baffles. My method involves filling 1/3 full and knocking the lever to compact the powder and takes some practice. The H450 needs no knocking an meters very well. It's not a big deal though because I weigh every round for the 30-06. The 10 mm gets thrown and checked every 20 rounds. 6.0 grains is easy to meter. I need baffles me thinks. I will make some.
