So the Hornady was on sale at the local police tactical store--and since my AR didn't like the Tula lacquer steel--I bought only a few boxes with some trepidation. Couple of guys fresh back from Afghanistan talked me into reconsidering my bias against red-dots and sold me on an Eotech promising I wouldn't be disappointed.
Because my mags were pre-loaded with M855, I set them aside for switching out while packing for the drive to the range. After some fun with my XD and Nano (still haven't got the hang of that Nano yet) we switched to the rifle side of the range. The rules allow only 100 yard paper targets on their boards, so I wasn't exactly ready to deal with zeroing my Eotech. Not only that, but in my haste I forgot all my mags at home!
I simply popped the Eotech on (nice lever lock) and hand-homed each round into the chamber, though I partially recharged the bolt just to make sure it was seated properly. I wasn't sure if there was a chance to inadvertently discharge doing this--so I kept the weapon pointed downrange at the target area only when range was clear when hand-loading the rounds. This may have been a blessing in disguise since in the end I only fired a dozen rounds.
I didn't get any bulls--and my setup is with no magnification--but I still was fairly impressed with all shots on paper in about a 6.5" grouping around the bulls. And that was with no zeroing at 100 yds.
I guess I can't make any conclusions about the reliability of the Hornady FMJ-BT since I didn't cycle the rounds from a mag--only that every one fired and ejected without a problem.
My question to the collective wisdom is: what is a good grouping at 100 yards using a 1 x Eotech? My feeling is that while I didn't get precision bulls shots, they were still effective kill-zone shots--I just don't know how much better I should be getting with a properly zeroed sight.
