i have a ruger sp101 3inch 357mag., and a ruger gp100 4inch 357mag. its been hard to find ammo around here lately, so when i went to the store today i was excited to hear the shop owner say i have 357 ammo in. he said its all he can get right now, its 140 grain hornady leverevolution ammo for revolvers and lever guns. he said it gives great performance in revolvers, lots of energy delivery. has anyone used this? and if so how did it do?, he had 8 boxes of it i bought 6, didn't want to get it all in case someone else needed a box or two. it was $19.95 for a box of 25, thanks for any help.

I bought a box of 357 and 44 mag of that LeverEvolution for my revolvers. I must confess that I have not yet shot any of it in those. I did shoot some of it in 30-30 and 45-70 in my rifles and it is some great stuff. I heard after I bought it though that the performance in revolvers wasn't so great just because the revolver velocities are too slow to ensure reliable expansion of the fancy pointed bullets. I don't know if that's true or not. I don't really care if it expands or not I guess. If it's pretty high velocity stuff I figured it would be like shooting hard cast ammo.

But that was before I started reloading, so I have plenty of new loads and bullets to play with now and those cartridges have just been sitting there gathering dust.

Just thinkin' out loud.

I'd guess that the velocity would be lower and the muzzle blast bigger. I can't figger out how it would harm anything.

Won't hurt anything, but it seems likely these will need a good head of steam to expand and they're unlikely to get that at 4" or under. I've shot some, and recoil told me what the specs also say: out of a handgun these aren't very potent.

It's possible filing the rubber nose flat (same as the Critical Defense slug by Hornady) might make them expand at lower speeds. It's what I'd do if I had nothing else available.
