Hornady 40sw 165g FTX

I bought a box of 20 for the first time at Academy and I shot 10 and saved ten for carry. Man, does it pop hard. Grouped pretty darn good at ten yards. These has to be the most powerful I've shot so far. I still have ten Win PDX1 165s I was carrying and they pop pretty good too but not as strong as the FTXs.

What do y'all think of them? Pretty good for SD? My pistol is a Sig P250c.
 
Can't speak with regards to the .40 caliber loading, but I've done a little backyard testing with the 115 gr 9mm loading and was definitely impressed. Shot into wet phonebooks, water, layered denim, and bone. Expanded quite well overall. Granted, this isn't scientific testing by any means, but nonetheless still gave me an idea at least of the cartridges potential.
 
I also picked up a box of 9mm 135g flexlocks. I shot 15 and they seemed to be pretty powerful as well. Good grouping too. Those were not +Ps but I'd like to try those.
 
I shoot 40S&W Critical Defense. One of the most powerful at 500ft/lbs. They are accurate and feed great. I am a Hornady fan with most of my calibers.

 
They're what I'm using for carry now with my 9mm and my 40sw. :)

Also it's whatever I can find at Academy and Wal-Mart. :p
 
I've got some of those too, and even the newer 175gr Critical Duty, but the 155-165gr class of bullets can definitely "pop" you pretty good when you pull the trigger.
 
I am surprised that the FTX was stronger than the Winchester PDX1. If their published ballistics data is to be believed, the Win 165 PDX has a muzzle velocity of 1140 vs 1045 for the FTX 165. And if muzzle energy is a good gauge of power, there are several others that are stronger. In just 165 the Speer Gold Dot, Corbon, Remington Ultimate Defense, and Remington Golden Saber all have higher muzzle energy. Plus there are many other bullet weights with higher energy in 135, 150 and 155.

Am I relying too much on published ballistics data or muzzle energy as a gauge?

40sw

FTX 165g - 506 fpe - 1175 fps

PDX1 165g - 476 fpe - 1140 fps

9mm +P

FlexLock 135g - 369 fpe - 1110 fps

PDX1 124g - 396 fpe - 1180 fps
 
Oysterboy - I am not familiar with the ballistics101 site. What is it? Does it have independent ballistics data? The data I posted was from the manufacturers' sites. Is their data unreliable?

I checked my numbers, and I had gotten the data for Hornady wrong - I was looking at the ZMax - thanks for the correction Oysterboy - your numbers are good and match the manufacturers published numbers

and I would indeed expect the FTX to be more powerful than the PDX1 - in fact, the only thing with more muzzle energy is the Corbon
