Hornaday Critical Defense

Anyone have experience with the Hornaday "Critical Defense" ammo? I caught an ad for it in this month's 'Guns & Ammo', and have been curious if it can do all it boasts to; deep clothing penetration, etc. I've read a few other reviews, and it's been a pretty half-and-half divide on like vs. hate. The two downsides I keep seeing mentioned are a.) price and b.) it allegedly does not hold up to the velocity specs that the co. touts. I'd like to run it through my CS9, but if it's as expensive as they say (I haven't checked for concrete prices yet) I don't want to waste the $$ I could put into Gold Sabres or something similar.

Opinions? Comments?

If the velocity holds up to what they claim, it's gonna be awesome. I've yet to see any independent ballistics tests on it. The non-clogging tip isn't anything new.

Stephen Camp did some testing on the 110gr 38Spl standard-pressure variant and liked it a lot.

It has a lot of potential. I want to see more precise gel tests before I'd carry it, but...let's put it this way: Hornady has known for a LONG time they had no decent low-speed defense slug. The XTP is a deep-punch slug that needs magnum speeds to work right. Hornady isn't incompetent; it seems likely they've finally filled this niche.

I used it in my LCP, never tested the ballistics but it was reliable, accurate, low-flash and low recoil. Sold to LCP yesterday though, cause I bought another .380. I'll see how it runs in the Seecamp and if it's reliable in it then I'll continue to use it.

Hello everyone. I am new here to the forums and just purchased my first brand new Glock 17, got it yesterday. Haven't shot it yet but going to go tomorrow to my CCW class and I get to put 50 rounds through it.

Anyhow, the dealer recommended the exact ammo your talking about here as being great for home defense use. I ended up buying a box of it they had for $20.99. I haven't shot it yet but I will try a few rounds of it when I am at the range and see how it does in my Glock.

One of the things he kept mentioning about this stuff is that it will fagment much better than te other brands they carried and also it will feed much smoother.

I want to see what prosecuting attorneys and the gun-fearing public think about this new stuff before I carry it. In the event I had to use it for self defense, it would be a shame to get sent to prison for having evil-voodoo bullets that can shoot through a schoolhouse.

Black Talons anyone?

The 147gr XTP JHP were the best ammo i found for my 357sig. I think they underload on alot of there offerings. I like their lever evolution ammo and i plan to try it in my 4in 686 and compare it to some others i like, but i think i will hand load the lever evolution bullets so i can hop them up a little. I think the design of the evolution and critical defense ammo is very similar.

I don't know much of anything about nuthin, but why do people pronounce and even spell their name as "Horn-a-day"?

Horn-a-DEEEEEEEE!!! :D

Black Talons anyone?

Has anyone actually received a harsher penalty than normal because they used a black talon? Or is that just a rumor?

I think it just sounds scary therefore is must be bad. And that polymer tip sure looks scary.

Psychology is much more powerful than guns will ever be.

I disagree with bullet separation being a desired feature. Any bullet that separates is one that stops penetrating, sometimes in a rather short distance.

Look at the ads by bullet companies. They will show the separated, multi- piece bullets as the failed ones, and the mushroomed-but-intact ones as the superior bullets they want to sell you.

So the rubbery stuff is scary!

Think of the fear induced by a pair of sneakers

And how frightening a racketball ball is. Wait, those really can be dangerous.

Who is looking closely at these new bullets, for several calibers.
