Can anyone suggest a cleaner I can use indoors that won't stink up the house like Hoppes or 7.62 yet clean just as well?

Thanks.

Joe

Wife is threatening to banish me to the garage. hehehe

The smell is from the solvents, mostly the Cellosolves (tm) that are esters. Esters usually have strong odors and are some of the bulk of the aroma of bananas, apples and oil of wintergreen (methyl salicylate (sp).

The trade-off for a less smelly solvent is less cleaning capacity.

pick something that smells much worse whether it will clean a gun at all and pretend to clean your guns. When she complains tell her that you think you could manage to swithc back to the other other stuff Sound reluctant and she will definetly force you go back. ask her to pick the lesser of two evils.

This strategy works well for women. Like if they tell to keep putting the toilet seat down do it. Then pee on it ...everytime. eventually they will decide that they would rather develop a habit of moving the seat rather than sitting in pee. Of course you have to sit in your own also but it is a small price to pay for our god given right to urinate while standing up.:D

ENC, are you really married?

Joe, go the the garage with good graces. If'n it don't smell bad, how do you know it's working? Make yourself a nice little gunny area (with good ventilation) and just use a little less Hoppe's. Also, get rid of the used patches immediately.

My wife lets me use G-96 (aerosol) in the house. Smells OK.

What about CLP? Never tried it, heard it smells OK.

Hoppe's without the smell wouldn't be Hoppe's. Half the joy of using it is the smell. The smell is what gets the bad stuff out of the barrel.

CLP doesn't have as strong a smell as good old No. 7, but it doesn't clean as thoroughly, either. I use the regular No. 7 and the Copper cleaner version.

That being said, Mrs. B makes me clean my rifles in the garage.

Semper fi,
Bruegger out.

Hoppes stink?

I have never heard such blasphemy! I have my hands over both ears now, LALALALALALA...... I Can't Hear You!

If plan A is for you to take multiple rounds of .308 in your back, I would come up with a plan B. Good luck.

Off topic totally, but...

Hey Keith!
It sounds as though you know of what you speak. Isn't the "banana ester" actually a phenol? 4-vinyl guiacol maybe? The apple is an aldehyde, I'm pretty sure. Acetaldehyde has a "granny smith apple" aroma. Whatdd'ya think?

As to Hoppe's, I second the remark about using it as an aftershave. I use spent patches as room deodorizers...soaked a little into the upholstery of my new car... (forget about "new car smell", give me "new gun smell" anyday)...
Hoppe's stinks? Blasphemy:D
vanfunk

Even the slightest hint that somebody finds Hoppe's #9 less than absolute heaven among beautiful aromas should be enough to get one banned from TFL! Fie upon such people! Fie! Fie, say I!!!

Also, yuck and :barf:.

I shudder just to think of such a Philistine!

, Art

In the event that she may be reactive to the stuff. Be a gentleman and help her desensitize. As with any other alergen, start small. .22 patch with a drop on it between the pillow and case on her favorite pillow. After a week move up to .30cal patch with two drops etc etc.

Or you might try a more Pavlovian approach. Give her a treat each time she smells Hoppe's. After a while tho, she might start drooling when she enters a gun store.

Sam...so many wives, so little money left.

I finally convinced my wife that the wondrous odor of Hoppe's #9 is, in fact, the scent of safety and security for her and the children.

She no longer complains. :D

Hoppes, the smell of safety...

good smell, brings back FOND memories of my childhood... shooting with dad, cleaning the weapons afterwards...

a 7 yr old boy (me), christmas morning, finds a single-shot .22 springfield bolt-cocker under the tree, and his VERY OWN cleaning kit, replete with a bottle of good ol' #9...

it don't GET any better than that!

M PRO 7

zero smell.

My sig other is highly asthmatic and is set off by any chemical smells .....Hoppes #9 is NEVER an option in my house.......I am currently soaking 2 glocks in a 1/2 gallon of M pro 7 in the living room right now.

zero smell.

SDnR ;)

I use Mpro7 when the ladies are helping me clean the guns... BUT, hoppes cleans much better, as when they leave, I swab it with hoppes and find a lot of dirty that Mpro7 missed.. Hoppes brass disolver just makes my Steyr look like a million bucks...

If your MPro7 is missing stuff, you need to heat it up first in the microwave. The MPro7, not the stuff.

Willy,... hmm really?? Does hot M7pro work better?? Enzyme activated or what?

I _don't_ own a microwave. I don't believe in nuking food... I believe in nuking terrorists, not food...
