I use Ed`s Red

1qt Kerosene
1qt mineral spirits
1qt Dex 3 ATF
1qt acetone

Store in glass containers to keep the acetone. You can omit the acetone if need be .
Do Not spill on wood finishes if ya use the acetone .

Works good for carbon/lead foulin ,but does little to copper fouling.

For copper foulin I plug the chamber & let windex with ammonia soak for 10min. at the time .

I personally have`nt shot a jacketed bullet in `bout 7yrs.

A big Plus one on Ed's Red...it's all I've used in my guns for over ten years...was developed by Ed Harris, long time Ruger engineer, NRA Rifleman "Dope Bag" contributer. He consulted with an organic chemist to re-engineer the old Frankford arsenal cleaning solution. The impetus for his work was his involvement in a large hi-power rifle team, and its subsequent needs for a large volume of cleaning solvent...a cost saving measure...

My use of Ed's Red has eased my leading issues in several long and short guns when large quanitities of lead alloy bullets were shot. It seemed to 'condition' the bore in my experience. While not a copper remover, it does a great job on all forms of burnt powder residue.

BTW, Ed allows that turpentine can be used instead of the mineral spirits, and that a small amount of lanoline can be added for longer term storage...makes it stick to the metal and reduces run off. Do a search and check out his remarks on its use.

Best Regards, Rodfac

What you're missing is that there are a lot more ingredients in Hoppe's #9 then just kerosene.

Kerosene is AN ingredient.

Thanks for the input on Ed`s Red rodfac !

I got lanolin ,may add a bit to my batch as I shoot lead exclusively these days .

Several high power competetitors in my area use Tops Engine Cleaner mixed about 3 to 1 with Kroil Oil as a solvent. The claim is that it replicates Shoorter's Choice, but costs much less.
