hopeing to find a 'COP' .357

Satanta, there is one listed in the current issue of Guns List. The ad follows;

COP .357 MAG., 4-barrel, stainless Derringer, excellent, $550 , Visa/MC/AMX, might trade guns. (800)536-2780

For what is is worth everything I have ever read about these they are junk. I've never owned or shot one so I have on personal knowledge.
If this one is already gone or you would like to look for another I would suggest checking Gun List fairly regular. You can find them at www.collectit.net

I was promised a Shortycicle and I want a Shortycicle!

i have a friend that owns a similar derringer in .38 special. it is similar to a gun that Mark Twain describes in his writings. "If a man stands still he would be entirely safe from harm as no one has ever hit much of anything with one of these guns. However, if he was to begin to move about he just might cross the path of one of its bullets and be injured."
i would not want one except to collect at the most.

In my opinion, you will be throwing your money away if you but one of these. I owned one 15 or 20 years ago and found it to be extremely painfull to shoot, and that's before it was even loaded. It had the most horrible trigger pull I have ever incountered. When it broke, I felt as though my trigger finger had also broken. It was almost impossible for me to control when fired for real. I have heard that several internal parts were subject to breakage. You have to figure there is a good reason whey they went out of production in very short order.

I used to own one. It is the worse gun that I have ever owned and about the only one that I sold because it was a total POS. The 4 barrels are not regulated so the patterns, if you can call it that, is square shaped and gets larger the furture you get from the target. That's right, NONE of the barrels on mine shot to the point of aim. The grip is small so you have a pinky dangling, it is thicker than a Glock 30 with only 40% of the ammo supply, it is heavier than a Glock 27 or Kahr MK9, and it is slower to reload than any of them. It shoots a .357 and out of that short a barrel is not able to generate any velocity to make the round do what it is known for. The 125gr Remington JHP does have a HUGE fireball, impressive when shot at night. The trigger pull would not register on a scale, over 15 pounds, LONG and not smooth. The pistol uses an internal rotating hammer to hit each of 4 firing pins and it would not go BANG everytime. bang-click-bang-click click-bang-click-click click-click-click-bang There, got off all 4. See what I mean? American Derringer in Waco, Tx has the rights to make it, but the design is so bad and full of problems they decided against trying to make it work. I bought mine for $115 used and sold it off in the late 1980's for $210. If you want it for a novelty, go for it, but if you carry it for defensive purposes, it you might get killed. If you take it to the range and tell people what you paid for it you will be embarassed right off the line. It does make a good compact club though, lord knows it is heavy enough.

Jeff...BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! I spit beer all over my monitor on that one!!!

Maybe I can find a busted one for collecting sakes....I'd still like to find a decent .357 derringer for pocket [T-shirt/Jeans] carry.

Had one from Buffalo Arms that I really like-square looking thing but I loved shooting it and at ten feet I could pick soda cans off a fence with close-to-center shots.

Satanta and Shin-Tao

This is one more example of, "You can't judge a book by its cover." The little gun looked pretty neat when first introduced. My second thought was, "Sure looks heavy, though." That wasn't the half of it. Heavy AND clumsy to carry. No holsters available. Luckily a friend had one for me to try out, and saved me the money and effort.

All that Clif and Jeff OTMG wrote was right on, AND they didn't mention how it felt to shoot with magnum loads. This is one of those little pistols where the ergonomics are ALL wrong. Other than the aforementioned total inaccuracy, the recoil was pretty okay with .38 wadcutters. With even warm .38 service loads, recoil was very uncomfortable. But with magnum loads, it was downright painful. In less than 100 rounds out of the box, its ignition had become unreliable. Admittedly, this was only one example, but the reputation was consistent.

Unless you are trying to complete a collection of something like, "Latter 20th Century Pocket Pistols: Neither Revolver nor Automatic," I really can't see spending money on one of these. In any case, best of luck.

The bad-guy at the end of the movie "Bad Boys" used the same gun if you're interested in seeing it. I fell in love with that gun when I saw that movie.

Satanta,
If you really want one I'll sell you mine. I inherited it about 3 months ago. I'd sell it to you for $50, but I'd feel bad cause I'd be ripping you off. Jeff OTMG hit the nail on the head.

Everything I need to know I learned in sniper school

Ah - the famed "My Mother? I'll tell you about my Mother!" scene.
Note: In the move the gun was mod to fire all 4 barrels at the same time.
Blanks dont have the recoil - but imagine 4 full house loads!

OUCH.

WHY?

The things were YUK.

Heavy as hell trigger and way too heavy overall.

You'd be much better served with a Smith J-frame .357.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

Why? Speaking for myself, I think I'd get one for many of the same reasons I'd get an '49 Mercury, a Victrola or a Delorian: a sense of history and or novelty. Sure, there are more efficient ways to invest your money, but how many people can say they have a COP? If you're a Blade Runner fan, the chance to have a prop or something very much like a prop featured in the movie is exciting. How about the kind of gun Eastwood used in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"? How about the gun the Dane had in "Miller's Crossing"? Sure, they may both be archaic weapons, but it'd be fun to have them.

If anyone is particularly interested, my local gunshop has one for $300(I think). If you want the phone number contact me via e-mail.

I like the concept of four barrels, but not in this application. Now, if they were four semi-automatic rifle barrels with one common trigger, that would be different.

They are really .....well everyone else has said it pretty well...they really are........I heard they had an experimental model in 50ae rumor or urban legend?...fubsy.
