Hope this EMP just needs breaking in!

Picked up my brand new Springfield Armory EMP 40 today. Beautiful 1911. Disassembled and lubed it. Went outside with five in the mag just to see if it would go bang. Getting late, but still plenty of light. Five shots at 50 feet. Wow! HORRIBLE group! Medium pizza size when I'm used to shooting coffee cup sized groups with my other 1911's at that distance. Reload five more. Same results.

I hope it's a break-in issue because I can't live with a pistol this inaccurate. Ten shots does not a "range session" make! Tomorrow will tell the tale. Good news is it shot all 10 rounds without a hiccup!

You're comparing a subcompact pistol in 40SW to what I have to assume are fullsize government or even commander models in 45ACP and you're surprised at differences? And this based off of 10 rds? Well, yea. Different sized pistols of different weights and different calibers can easily result in an adjustment period.

Not really

My Kimber Ultra Carry II has a 3" bbl and it is just as accurate as my SA full size or my SA 4" Champion. I'm not sure "size matters" all that much. I'm betting that with better light and a few rounds through it, this gun will perform.

I'd guess that gun has a bit of a learning curve. You may never shoot it as well as your other 1911s but it isn't really designed as a range gun either.

Anyway, with some more trigger time, I suspect your group will improve.

Congrats on the nice gun.

Nope - the Kimber is a 45 ACP

Should it make a real difference at 50 feet?

Sure didn't mean to start a ruckus. I know I haven't given this little 1911 a chance. It has a great reputation for accuracy, so I'm expecting with a few more rounds through it and my "getting used to it" will fulfill that reputation.

It can. Again, different caliber, different size, all of these can impact your results. Personally I have found few people shoot 40SW as well as 9mm or 45ACP.

I don't think you started a ruckus, but your initial post is pretty negative so I'm just trying to explain that each pistol is its own animal and takes time to warm up to.

100 rounds through my EMP today.

100 rounds through my EMP today. Shot Winchester white box and my reloads (180 grain) flawlessly. Groups tightened considerably in the daylight (LOL), but high and left with all loads at all distances. I can live with "high", but not "left".

Took out the set screw and put the slide in my vice. JEEZUS - what it took to drift that Novak sight! Holy smokes! I actually bent one of my cheap gunsmith brass punches. I finally got that sight over a bit, but was amazed at how hard I had to whack it to get it to budge. Anyway, she's not shooting great, but some more time with her will correct that.

In short, I think all is going to be well with this little 40 S&W!!:):)

there is enough difference in that grip and what you are used to that you are pushing the muzzle left a little not realizing it more than likely, you are probably placing your finger tip just like on your normal 1911s ( we are creatures of habit)but that slightly smaller grip circumference is giving you a slight push, getting a little more finger on the trigger will pull you back to center it will probably fell a little wrong until you get used to it though, muscle memory will move you back automatically on your other 1911s;)
