This cheered me up a little bit today, thought perhaps it could do the same for y'all...I teach high school history and recently assigned an essay on the Second Amendment to my students. I only asked for the students to give me their personal opinion on the 2nd, its meaning and relevance in American society. After grading them, I realized 99% of the papers reflect a very strong pro-2nd Amendment mindset; a few of the papers mentioned registration, and a couple mentioned the belief that military arms should not be made available to civilians...but these were the exception to the rule. The word "confiscation" never appeared, I'm happy to report, and overall I was very surprised. Even though this is the Deep South (Florida Panhandle) and a rather conservative county, I expected a lot more anti-2nd Amendment rhetoric. These kids are tomorrow's leaders, and their beliefs and attitudes will shape our future. To see their recognition of the importance of the Bill of Rights, and the importance of the 2nd as the cornerstone of that document, does my heart good. It's times like this that I catch myself thinking, perhaps there is hope after all...
